Sixth Sunday of Easter
9:15am
Prelude
Greeting and Welcome
Hymn of InvocationThine the Amen, Thine the Praise (LSB 680)

Thine the amen, Thine the praise
Alleluias angels raise
Thine the everlasting head
Thine the breaking of the bread
Thine the glory, Thine the story
Thine the harvest then the cup
Thine the vineyard then the cup is
Lifted up, lifted up.

Thine the life eternally,
Thine the glory let there be
Thine the vision, Thine the tree
All the earth on bended knee
Gone the nailing, gone the railing
Gone the pleading, gone the cry
Gone the sighing, gone the dying
What was loss lifted high.

Thine the truly, Thine the yes
Thine the table, we the guest
Thine the mercy all from Thee
Thine the glory yet to be
Then the ringing and the singing
Then the end of all the war
Thine the living, Thine the loving
Evermore, evermore.

Thine the kingdom, Thine the prize
Thine the wonderful surprise
Thine the banquet then the praise
Then the justice of Thy ways
Thine the glory, Thine the story
Then the welcome to the least
Then the wonder all increasing
At Thy feast, at Thy feast.

Thine the glory in the night
No more dying only light
Thine the river, Thine the tree
Then the Lamb eternally
Then the holy, holy, holy
Celebration jubilee
Thine the splendor, Thine the brightness
Only Thee, only Thee.

Invocation
P:+In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:+Amen.
Confession and Absolution
P:+The three sad days have quickly sped,
He rises glorious from the dead.
All glory to our risen Head! Alleluia! (LSB 464:3)
P:+Alleluia! Christ is risen!
C:+He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
P:+Even as we glory in the gift of eternal life, in that hope we spend our days in joyful repentance and faith. Let us confess our sin, the sin that still so easily besets us, and receive the full forgiveness our Lord daily provides for us.
C:+Lord God, though the strife is over, the battle done, and now is the victor’s triumph won, sin still hangs on. We are Your baptized people. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us into our Easter joy.
P:+Upon this, your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you. And in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:+Amen.
+ Word +
Salutation and Collect of the Day
P:+The Lord be with you.
C:+And also with you.
P:+Let us pray. God our Father, You protect Your children from all that would harm our salvation. Give us the courage of faith and love toward You, that we have boldness to live for You and confess Your holy name before all; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:+Amen.
First Reading – Acts 4:23-37
+When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’—for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
+Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.

P:+This is the Word of the Lord.
C:+Thanks be to God.
Epistle – 1 Peter 3:13–22
+Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.
+For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

P:+This is the Word of the Lord.
C:+Thanks be to God.
Holy Gospel – John 14:15–21
P:+The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fourteenth chapter.
C:+Glory to You, O Lord.

+“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
+“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

P:+This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C:+Praise to You, O Christ.
Children’s Song – Standin' in the Need of Prayer (AGPS 220, v. 1-2)

Not my brother, nor my sister,
But it's me, O Lord,
Standin' in the need of prayer;
Not my brother, nor my sister,
But it's me, O Lord,
Standin' in the need of prayer. Refrain

Refrain: It's me, it's me, O Lord,
Standin' in the need of prayer;
It's me, it's me, O Lord,
Standin' in the need of prayer.

Not the preacher, nor the deacon,
But it's me, O Lord,
Standin' in the need of prayer;
Not the preacher, nor the deacon,
But it's me, O Lord,
Standin' in the need of prayer. Refrain
Children’s Message
Hymn of the Day – The Church's One Foundation (LSB 644)

The Church's one foundation
Is Jesus Christ, her Lord;
She is His new creation
By water and the Word.
From heav'n He came and sought her
To be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her,
And for her life He died.

Elect from ev'ry nation,
Yet one o'er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation:
One Lord, one faith, one birth.
One holy name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses
With ev'ry grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder
The world sees her oppressed,
By schisms rent assunder,
By heresies distressed,
Yet saints their watch are keeping;
Their cry goes up, "Ho long?"
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song.

Through toil and tribulation
And tumult of her war
She waits the consummation
Of peace forevermore
Till with the vision glorious
Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth has union
With God, the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won.
O blessed heavn'ly chorus!
Lord, save us by Your grace
That we, like saints before us,
May see You face to face.
Sermon
Apostles' Creed
C:+I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
+And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
+ I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Preface
P:+The Lord be with you.
C:+And also with you.
P:+Lift up your hearts.
C:+We lift them to the Lord.
P:+Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C:+It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
P:+It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And most especially are we bound to praise You on this day for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us and bore the sins of the world. By His dying He has destroyed death, and by His rising again He has restored to us everlasting life. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and praise, together with the Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever.
C:+Amen.
The Words of Our Lord
P:+Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Proclamation of Christ
P:+As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
C:+Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
P:+O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:
Lord’s Prayer
C:+Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Pax Domini
P:+The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C:+Amen.

Closing Hymn – A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (LSB 656)

A mighty fortress is our God,
A trusty shield and weapon;
He helps us free from ev'ry need
That hath us now o'ertaken.
The old evil foe
Now means deadly woe;
Deep guile and great might
Are his dread arms in fight;
On earth is not his equal.

With might of ours can naught be done,
Soon were our loss effected;
But for us fights the valiant One,
Whom God himself elected.
Ask ye, Who is this?
Jesus Christ it is,
Of Sabaoth Lord,
And there's none other God;
He holds the field forever.

Though devils all the world should fill,
All eager to devour us,
We tremble not, we fear no ill;
They shall not overpow'r us.
This world's prince may still
Scowl fierce as he will,
He can harm us none.
He's judged; the deed is done;
One little word can fell him.

The Word they still shall let remain
Nor any thanks have for it;
He's by our side upon the plain
With His good gifts and Spirit.
And take they our life,
Goods, fame, child, and wife,
Though these all be gone,
Our vict'ry has been won;
The Kingdom ours remaineth.

Weekly Newsletter

Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
May 14, 2020
As I said in church last Sunday, we are inviting members to join us in the sanctuary on Sunday May 24th which is two Sundays from now. Of course everyone wants to be back together for worship, to recover what we’ve gone without. We want to be careful; therefore each household has to contemplate God’s will for them in this decision. Pray and seek an answer. Your decision is not a reflection of your faith or courage. For those who are most vulnerable, it is wise to wait until conditions are better. For those who have very little risk then it is time to rejoin. For everyone in between, feel free to take as many weeks as you need.

This is a soft opening of worship to the congregation. I don’t expect everyone back. It will probably be gradual. This will actually be helpful because our limit will be 75 in the sanctuary. Our usual Sunday worship before all this was 100. This first Sunday I’d assume will be around half of that. As more people feel safe to return, we can adjust, week by week.

For those who do come, I know you will put others above yourself. That’s what the early church in Acts did and that’s what Glendale Lutheran does. We have to set aside handshakes and hugs for a time. You may not feel like you want to wear a mask but first consider those in the next pew. The safer people feel the greater the likelihood they will come to church. Here are the steps we will take to be safe and make people feel secure.

  • Make sure you are healthy Sunday morning.

  • The front doors will remain open before, during and after service to minimize contact.

  • No greeters or ushers.

  • We will have a maximum of 75 people in the sanctuary. (Based off County Guidelines)

  • Congregants are welcome to use a mask.

  • Every other pew will be roped off to create a buffer.

  • Households will sit at least 6 feet away from other households.

  • Bulletins will be used instead of hymnals.

  • The Family Life Center will be for those who need to be extra careful and distant. Refrain from singing in the FLC.

  • Offering will be on the back table.

  • During communion, Pastor and an elder will come to each household’s pew. If you aren’t ready to take communion, just cross your arms when approached.

  • Bible class will be telecast rather than in person.

I’d love to get a gauge on who wants to attend services on the 24th. Please either email me at scottjonas314@gmail.com or text me at 805-345-6658 and let me know. Your suggestions are welcome as well. Christ is for us and nothing can separate us from the love of God.
