GODISNOWHERE - article by Joel Hempel

Many years ago, at the Laclede Groves Retirement Community Chapel, when I preached a sermon by the same title as this devotional article, there was a woman in the congregation who was completely deaf. But she faithfully worshiped with us by feeling the vibrations of the organ music and reading the bulletin. Then, every Sunday, she would come out of worship and greet me with a big smile and a loud “Thank you, Chaplain.”

But on the occasion of this sermon, as she came out of the chapel, I could see she was upset. With a frown and an emphatic voice, she declared, “That is wrong!” pointing at the sermon’s title in the bulletin. She was reading the title as some of you have read it; GOD IS NOWHERE. Then I took her bulletin and, with my pen, marked the title with slashes: GOD/IS/NOW/HERE. And with that slight change in seeing the truth of the sermon title, her frown turned to a broad smile, and her displeasure shifted to a resounding: Yes!

Whether or not we recognize and trust that God is with us and caring for us – in good times and bad – makes all the difference in the world.

Holy Week is the perfect time to remember the tension embedded in GODISNOWHERE. I know Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are high holy days. And I dearly love the Gospel associated with each of these remembrances. But the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter is especially poignant because it symbolizes what we can easily feel when we look around during troubling times and can’t find or experience God anywhere.

I doubt that any of us would let the words come out of our mouth – or even into our heart – that Jesus is defeated, useless, and dead! But that was the feeling of those first disciples on the Saturday following the crucifixion of Christ. Imagine the depth of their despair. Thank God we never have to experience their agony.

But, at those times in our life when it seems God or Jesus is nowhere, go ahead and feel the angst. Let your cries be known to God. Because the joy of the resurrection will be that much sweeter when his Spirit leads you back to the truth on which we rely: God is now here!

Hempel's Book: Spiritual Care Basics and Beyond

Several people have asked about my book. It is entitled Spiritual Care Basics and Beyond: Interpersonal Tools and Resources for Spiritual Care.

This book can be found on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and the Wipf & Stock Publisher’s website. It is also available on Kindle. If you purchase the book from one of these sources, you will pay $28.00. The online Kindle price is $8.99. However, as the author, I can buy hardcopies (paperback) for half price plus shipping and handling. So, the price is $15.00 if you let me know you want a copy.

Although you are welcome to buy the book, please know that the book’s purpose is to provide a practical guide for any lay or professional minister or seminarian who wants to become more competent in providing spiritual care within a congregation or institutional setting.

However, as someone pointed out to me, it could be helpful to anyone who wants to improve their listening and other interpersonal skills.

The reader will also be invited to identify their healed and unhealed psychological and emotional wounds that impact ministry and to clarify their living faith, which undergirds spiritual care.

Hymn of Invocation – Lord, Whose Love through Humble Service (LSB 848)

Lord, whose love through humble service

Bore the weight of human need,

Who upon the cross, forsaken,

Offered mercy’s perfect deed,

We, Your servants, bring the worship

Not of voice alone, but heart,

Consecrating to Your purpose

Ev’ry gift that You impart.

Still Your children wander homeless;

Still the hungry cry for bread;

Still the captives long for freedom;

Still in grief we mourn our dead.

As, O Lord, Your deep compassion

Healed the sick and freed the soul,

Use the love Your Spirit kindles

Still to save and make us whole.

As we worship, grant us vision,

Till Your love’s revealing light

In its height and depth and greatness,

Dawns upon our quickened sight,

Making known the needs and burdens

Your compassion bids us bear,

Stirring us to tireless striving,

Your abundant life to share.

Called by worship to Your service,

Forth in Your dear name we go,

To the child, the youth, the aged,

Love in living deeds to show;

Hope and health, goodwill and comfort,

Counsel, aid, and peace we give,

That Your servants, Lord, in freedom

May Your mercy know and live.

+ Preparation +

Invocation

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Opening Sentences

P:  I will go to the altar of God,

C:  to God my exceeding joy.

P:  Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C:  who made heaven and earth.

Confession and Absolution

P:  I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C:  for with the Lord is plenteous redemption and the forgiveness of all our sins.

P:  Let us then confess our sins unto our gracious Lord.

C:  Almighty God, Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all people, we admit and confess our sinfulness. We have turned away from one another in our thinking, speaking, and doing. We have done the evil You forbid and have not done the good You demand. We do repent and are truly sorry for these our sins. Have mercy on us, kind Father, because of the obedience of our brother, Jesus Christ, Your Son. Forgive us all that is past and with the power of the Holy Spirit, move us to serve You faithfully. Set our feet upon the new path of life, and build Your kingdom here through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

P:  God has promised forgiveness of sins to those who repent and turn to Him. In His stead and by His command, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

P:  God keep you in His grace by the Holy Spirit, lead you to greater faith and obedience, and bring you to live with Him forever, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C:  Amen.

+ Word +

Prayer of the Day

P:  O Lord, in this wondrous Sacrament You have left us a remembrance of Your passion. Grant that we may so receive the sacred mystery of Your body and blood that the fruits of Your redemption may continually be manifest in us; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

First Reading Exodus 24:3–11

Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the just decrees And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do.” And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. He rose early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. And he sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the Lord. And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw against the altar. Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.” And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Psalm Psalm 116:12-19

P:  What shall I render to the Lord for all His benefits to me?

C:  I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord,

P:  I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all His people.

C:  Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.

P:  O Lord, I am Your servant; I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant. You have loosed my bonds.

C:  I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the Lord.

P:  I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all His people,

C:  in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord!

Epistle Hebrews 9:11–22

But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – Matthew 26:17-30

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-sixth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn of the Day – Lord Jesus, Think on Me (LSB 610)

Lord Jesus, think on me

And purge away my sin;

From worldly passions set me free

And make me pure within.

Lord Jesus, think on me,

By anxious thoughts oppressed;

Let me Your loving servant be

And taste Your promised rest.

Lord Jesus, think on me

Amid the battle’s strife;

In all my pain and misery,

O be my health and life!

Lord Jesus, think on me

Nor let me go astray;

Through darkness and perplexity

Point out Your chosen way.

Lord Jesus, think on me

That, when this life is past,

I may the eternal brightness see

And share Your joy at last.

Sermon

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of the Church

P:  Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. For the faithful proclamation of Christ’s saving name, that God’s people may be strengthened in the true faith and His kingdom extended, let us pray to the Lord:

C:  Lord, have mercy.

P:  For the Holy Christian Church throughout the world and for all who confess the name of Christ, that God would guard and defend us from the temptations of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, let us pray to the Lord:

C:  Lord, have mercy.

P:  For this congregation, its mission and its people; for the ability to meet the needs that arise as we do the work God has given us to do; and for the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, let us pray to the Lord:

C:  Lord, have mercy.

P:  For all who partake this day of Christ’s holy body and blood, that in their eating and drinking they may receive the benefits of forgiveness of sins and the renewal of life and have a foretaste of the feast to come, let us pray to the Lord:

C:  Lord, have mercy.

P:  For all of us gathered here in worship, that the blessings of this service be shown forth in our lives as we live in peaceable service to one another and in the world, let us pray to the Lord:

C:  Lord, have mercy and grant us Your peace. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C:  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  And also with you.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Jesus, Greatest at the Table (LSB 446)

Jesus, greatest at the table,

The almighty Son of Man,

Laid aside His outer clothing,

Poured some water in a pan;

As the Twelve lay, hushed in silence,

He the servant’s task began.

Marvel how their Lord and teacher

Gently taught them not to vie

As He humbly knelt before them,

Dusty feet to wash and dry,

By His tender touch expressing

True compassion from on high.

Jesus took the role of servant

When upon that gruesome span,

For all human sin He suffered

As a vile and loathsome man;

On the cross poured out like water

To fulfill the Father’s plan.

Can we fathom such deep mercy?

Do we see what God has done?

Who can grasp this great reversal:

Love that gives His only Son?

Christ, the sinless for the sinners,

For the many dies the One.

Jesus gave to His disciples

A commandment that was new:

“Show My love to one another,

Do as I have done for you;

All the world will know you love Me

As you love each other too.”

The Stripping of the AltarPsalm 22

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”

Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts. On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb you have been my God.

Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help. Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet—I can count all my bones—they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.

But you, O Lord, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid! Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog! Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen! I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.

From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever! All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations. All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive. Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.

Hymn – The Old Rugged Cross

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

The emblem of suffering and shame;

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best

For a world of lost sinners was slain. Refrain

Refrain:  So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,

              ‘Til my trophies at last I lay down;

              I will cling to the old rugged cross,

              And exchange it some day for a crown.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,

Has a wondrous attraction for me;

For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above

To pardon and sanctify me. Refrain

In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,

A wondrous beauty I see;

For ‘twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died

To pardon and sanctify me. Refrain

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true,

Its shame and reproach gladly bear;

Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away

Where His glory forever I’ll share. Refrain

PsalmPsalm 38:1-4, 18, 22; antiphon: Isaiah 53:5

P:  He was wounded for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities;

C:  upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His stripes we are healed.

P:  O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger,

C:  nor discipline me in your wrath!

P:  For your arrows have sunk into me,

C:  and your hand has come down on me.

P:  There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation;

C:  there is no health in my bones because of my sin.

P:  For my iniquities have gone over my head;

C:  like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.

P:  I confess my iniquity;

C:  I am sorry for my sin.

P:  Make haste to help me,

C:  O Lord, my salvation!

P:  He was wounded for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities;

C:  upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His stripes we are healed.

Silence for reflection on the Word of God and our sins carried by Christ to the cross.

Confession and Absolution - Hebrews 4:14–16

P:  Jesus understands our weaknesses because He was truly human. “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.”

C:  “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

P:  Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

P:  The Lord be with you

C:  And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

P:  Let us pray. Almighty God, graciously behold this Your family for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed and delivered into the hands of sinful men to suffer death upon the cross; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 52:13—53:12

Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted. As many were astonished at you—his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—so shall he sprinkle many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which has not been told them they see, and that which they have not heard they understand.

Who has believed what they heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.

Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.

Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Hymn – There Is a Green Hill Far Away (AGPS 235)

There is a green hill far away,

Outside a city wall,

Where the dear Lord was crucified,

Who died to save us all.

We may not know, we cannot tell

What pains He had to bear,

But we believe it was for us

He hung and suffered there.

He died that we might be forgiv’n,

He died to make us good,

That we might go at last to heav’n,

Saved by His precious blood.

There was no other good enough

To pay the price of sin,

He only could unlock the gate

Of heav’n and let us in.

Oh, dearly, dearly has He loved!

And we must love Him too

And trust in His redeeming blood

And try His works to do.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Church

P:  Heavenly Father, we are torn by so many conflicting thoughts and feelings on this holy night. We grieve our Savior’s suffering and death and feel shame in the knowledge that our sin made His death necessary. We repent, Father, of our sin. Ease our grief and remove our shame. What was meant for evil, You made good. We are forgiven.

C:  It is finished.

P:  Amid sadness, Father, You bring us infinite joy and gladness. Though He could have called down a legion of angels to rescue, it is because of Jesus’ complete and all-surpassing sacrifice that we can be forgiven. It was because of His love that we can be restored to Your good plans. It was because of His suffering and death that we have Your mercy. Lord, what we can understand of Jesus’ sacrifice overwhelms us with amazement. Yet we cannot begin to grasp the extent of the ordeal He endured when the world’s sin separated Him from You. Instill in us awe and wonder at His incredible love for us. What was meant for evil, You made good. We are forgiven.

C:  It is finished.

P:  Father, teach us to hear well the clear message of Your love for us that we may live as Your people every day. Through Jesus’ separation from You on the cross, we have been restored. Through His shame, our shame is removed. Through His condemnation as the wages of sin, we have been freed. What was meant for evil, You made good. We are forgiven.

C:  It is finished.

P:  Father, while we delight in the wonder and mystery of this holy night and rejoice in the grace won for us on the cross, the world continues in its futile and empty course, ignorant of what You have done. Give us courage and boldness to speak the truth of Your story to those around us. Keep us in Your care during these lonely hours and return us soon to this place to celebrate the completion of the story of Your great love manifest in our Savior, Jesus. What was meant for evil, You made good. We are forgiven.

C:  It is finished.

P:  We pray all these things in His holy name.

C:  Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Preface

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Lift up your hearts.

C:  We lift them to the Lord.

P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Proper Preface

P:  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who accomplished the salvation of mankind by the tree of the cross that, where death arose, there life also might rise again and that the serpent who overcame by the tree of the garden might likewise by the tree of the cross be overcome. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

C:  Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Jesus, I Will Ponder Now (LSB 440)

Jesus, I will ponder now

On Your holy passion;

With Your Spirit me endow

For such meditation.

Grant that I in love and faith

May the image cherish

Of Your suff’ring, pain, and death

That I may not perish.

Make me see Your great distress,

Anguish, and affliction,

Bonds and stripes and wretchedness

And Your crucifixion;

Make me see how scourge and rod,

Spear and nails did wound You,

How for them You died, O God,

Who with thorns had crowned You.

Yet, O Lord, not thus alone

Make me see Your passion,

But its cause to me make known

And its termination.

Ah! I also and my sin

Wrought Your deep affliction;

This indeed the cause has been

Of Your crucifixion.

Grant that I Your passion view

With repentant grieving.

Let me not bring shame to You

By unholy living.

How could I refuse to shun

Ev’ry sinful pleasure

Since for me God’s only Son

Suffered without measure?

If my sins give me alarm

And my conscience grieve me,

Let Your cross my fear disarm;

Peace of conscience give me.

Help me see forgiveness won

By Your holy passion.

If for me He slays His Son,

God must have compassion!

Graciously my faith renew;

Help me bear my crosses,

Learning humbleness from You,

Peace mid pain and losses.

May I give You love for love!

Hear me, O my Savior,

That I may in heav’n above

Sing Your praise forever.

First WordLuke 23:32-34a

Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

1. Our Response - Denial

Hymn – O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (LSB 450, verse 1)

O sacred Head, now wounded,

With grief and shame weighed down,

Now scornfully surrounded

With thorns, Thine only crown.

O sacred Head, what glory,

What bliss, till now was Thine!

Yet, though despised and gory,

I joy to call Thee mine.

Second WordLuke 23:35-43

And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”

One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

2. Our Response - Unbelief

Hymn – O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (LSB 450, verse 2)

How pale Thou art with anguish,

With sore abuse and scorn!

How doth Thy face now languish

That once was bright as morn!

Grim death, with cruel rigor,

Hath robbed Thee of Thy life;

Thus Thou hast lost Thy vigor,

Thy strength, in this sad strife.

Third WordJohn 19:25-27

…but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

3. Our Response – Cruelty

Hymn – O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (LSB 450, verse 3)

What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered

Was all for sinners’ gain;

Mine, mine was the transgression,

But Thine the deadly pain.

Lo, here I fall, my Savior!

’Tis I deserve Thy place;

Look on me with Thy favor,

And grant to me Thy grace.

Fourth WordMatthew 27:45-47

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”

4. Our Response – Greed

Hymn – O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (LSB 450, verse 4)

My Shepherd, now receive me;

My Guardian, own me Thine.

Great blessings Thou didst give me,

O Source of gifts divine.

Thy lips have often fed me

With words of truth and love;

Thy Spirit oft hath led me

To heav’nly joys above.

Fifth WordJohn 19:28-29

After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.

5. Our Response - Apathy

Hymn – O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (LSB 450, verse 5)

What language shall I borrow

To thank Thee, dearest Friend,

For this Thy dying sorrow,

Thy pity without end?

O make me Thine forever!

And should I fainting be,

Lord, let me never, never,

Outlive my love for Thee.

Sixth WordJohn 19:29-30

A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

6. Our Response - Hatred

Hymn – O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (LSB 450, verse 6)

My Savior, be Thou near me

When death is at my door;

Then let Thy presence cheer me,

Forsake me nevermore!

When soul and body languish,

O leave me not alone,

But take away mine anguish

By virtue of Thine own!

Seventh WordLuke 23:44-46; Matthew 27:54

It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.

When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

Hymn – O Sacred Head, Now Wounded (LSB 450, verse 7)

Be Thou my consolation,

My shield, when I must die;

Remind me of Thy passion

When my last hour draws nigh.

Mine eyes shall then behold Thee,

Upon Thy cross shall dwell,

My heart by faith enfold Thee.

Who dieth thus dies well.

Hymn – Were You There (LSB 456, verses 1-2)

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?

Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?

Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?

Reading John 19:38-42

After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

Hymn – Were You There (LSB 456, verse 3)

Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?
