Pastor Biermann's Glimpses Message and intro for new Bible class

Pastor Biermann's updated Glimpses Message for June 15 and introducation for the new Sunday Bible class.

The third Sunday in June is almost upon us: according to long custom and US law since 1972, the June 18, 2017 is Father's Day.  For most fathers, it doesn't seem particularly surprising or even significant that it took until 1972 for their day to achieve national holiday status.  Frankly, it's not unexpected that mothers got their day almost 60 years earlier.  Mother's take precedence, and that's fine with most fathers.  Besides, at the time, it was men who were establishing the holidays, and from the standpoint of simple politics, it's much easier to vote for a holiday honoring someone else.

While I'm inclined to concur with the politicians and let Father's Day arrive without much fanfare or preparation; this year, at least, I'm going to violate the wisdom that argues against a father promoting Father's Day.  This year, I want everyone to celebrate Father's Day with me, by joining me for the first study of a new Sunday Bible Class.  Last week, I Peter was completed.  This week, we launch into a fresh topic: The Lord's Prayer as explained and taught by Martin Luther in his Large Catechism.  I can think of no better way to spend part of Father's Day than by studying the prayer that the church has long called the pater noster, "The Our Father".

Luther's Large Catechism treatment of "The Our Father," the Lord's Prayer, is remarkable.  He understands the depth and the power of the prayer; and he applies it to the lives of real and ordinary Christian people in ways that are sometimes startling, and always uncannily relevant for a man writing five centuries ago.  I am very eager to dive into this study with all of you for so many reasons.  This is the great prayer of the Christian church, given to us by Christ himself.  It is the prayer that unites all believers in Christ.  This is the 500th anniversary year of the beginning of the Reformation, so spending some time with Luther will be entirely appropriate.  And, finally, the insights into your Christian life that you will gain in this study will be important.  I'll see you on Sunday in worship...and then in Bible class, ready to learn more about "The Our Father" and of course, our Father.

Pastor Biermann's Message
This past Sunday was Pentecost, which means that this coming Sunday is Trinity Sunday. This is a great festival in the church year. Certainly, every Sunday is a celebration of God's reality and the praise of his grace and glory, but Trinity Sunday is particularly focused on the very being or identity of God as Triune: three distinct persons yet one simple God. Three in one--Tri-une. So, on Sunday we sing "Holy, Holy, Holy" and on Sunday we confess the Athanasian Creed.

I realize that some of you might consider such a disclosure to be counter-productive to encouraging church attendance! I have learned, over the years, that not everyone is fond of the Athanasian Creed; indeed, the Creed even has its detractors. The criticism of the great Christian Confession seems to be two-pronged: it's long and its confusing. On the first count, it must be granted that this is the longest of the three ecumenical creeds that guide the faith of all Christians. But, the recitation of the creed does not have to be a bout of painful unison reading. It's a lively confession and deserves a lively articulation-besides it's only once a year! You can be confident that Sunday's confession of the creed will be brisk and robust.

The charge of confusion is a bit more serious. Since the Creed tackles head-on the task of confessing the depth and wonder of God's being, it shouldn't be too surprising that it can be a bit daunting. God's being is by definition incomprehensible, so it might be expected that the Creed can seem a bit overwhelming and even confusing. The key is not to obsess over the tiny details as you confess it, but to delight in the fullness and comprehensive thoroughness of the declaration of God's Triune reality. And the good news is that immediately after the service, all in attendance will be able to find answers to every question, explore every detail, and satisfyingly define every term at the outset of Bible class. So, come to worship this Sunday ready to confess the Athanasian Creed. Come, ready to celebrate the Trinity.

Glendale VBS - THANK YOU!
Dear Glendale Lutheran Church Friends,

VBS week has come and gone! For 5 days, we were able to proclaim the truth of Jesus and his love to 70 children from the community. God is good, and for this we give Him thanks! Thanks is also due to each one of you who supported this ministry in prayer; for apart from God's Spirit, we accomplish nothing good. Thank you also to everyone who donated goods, volunteered their time setting up, cooking at the picnic, and leading the children last week. This truly was a whole church effort, and a huge success. Thank you for the opportunity to come along side and partner with you in ministry. May God bless your pastoral search, and guide each of you to a deeper understanding of His love for you in Jesus.
