Vampire Bats - article by Joel Hempel

Yep! Look it up. They’re real. Well, you might not want to. They are ugly and scary looking.

Many years ago, after Marcia, the boys, and I lived in the inner city of Cincinnati for twelve years, we bought our first house four blocks from our church. It was a hundred years old, two stories, seven large rooms, two bathrooms, and a full basement with a tiny yard. We paid 18 K for it. For that price, you can imagine what shape it was in. But it was ours!

The house’s first floor needed to be fully gutted and renovated one room at a time. So, we lived in part of the house while the rest was being worked on.

One night while sleeping in our second-floor bedroom, we were awakened by the most soul-piercing scream. Marcia and I simultaneously jumped out of bed.

What was that? It was the inner city, after all. We were used to all kinds of sounds: Sirens, gunshots, loud arguing voices, and an occasional, “Hey, Pasta Joe, you up there?” But this was different! Scary different!

After searching everywhere, finding nothing, and ensuring our boys were okay, we returned to bed. Screech! There it was again. This time, after carefully and defensively searching every corner and closet, I decided that if this thing were somewhere in the walls or under the floorboards, we would keep it locked away.

Thank God for duct tape! For the next couple of hours, Marcia and I taped every – and I mean every – crack and hole where a scary creature could live. The tape did not keep the thing quiet, but it stopped – I made myself believe – the thing (whatever it was) from attacking us overnight.

The following day, Marcia made me call the exterminator. Two hours later, Fred showed up.

What’s going on? Fred inquired with authority.

Just listen! I directed.

Sure enough, it wasn’t long before the screeching sound penetrated the house. Fred’s eyes became as big as saucers.

What is that? I demanded.

It’s a vampire bat!

What? Is that a real thing?

Without responding, Fred walked a few feet away and called his boss. John, listen to this. Is it what I think it is? Holding up the phone, the squealing sound cried out again. Yea, I was afraid of that! A vampire bat!

Fred turned toward us and declared they would have to exterminate the place. We scheduled Fred’s return; then, we had to go on with our lives. Marcia went to work, and I went out in the neighborhood to make a few house visits.

As I was walking the streets, I ran into Olga, a street-savvy member of our congregation.

Olga! You can’t imagine what happened at our house last night! I then proceeded to tell her the story I just told you. At the end, she asked,

Did the creature make a sound like this? Olga perfectly and loudly squealed out the exact blood-curdling sound.

That’s it. I confirmed.

That’s your smoke alarm. It needs a new battery.

I told you that story to get to this:

Sometimes our worst fears are not as scary as we think they are. And at other times, when there is good reason to be afraid, there is a way into and through the fear.

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for YOU are with me” (Psalm 23:4).

Whatever the reason for the fear – real or imagined – the Spirit of Christ is with us to give us courage.

Hymn of Invocation – All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name (LSB 549)

All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name!

Let angels prostrate fall;

Bring forth the royal diadem

And crown Him Lord of all.

Bring forth the royal diadem

And crown Him Lord of all.

Crown Him, ye martyrs of our God,

Who from His altar call;

Extol the stem of Jesse’s rod

And crown Him Lord of all.

Extol the stem of Jesse’s rod

And crown Him Lord of all.

Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race,

Ye ransomed from the fall,

Hail Him who saves you by His grace

And crown Him Lord of all.

Hail Him who saves you by His grace

And crown Him Lord of all.

Hail Him, ye heirs of David’s line,

Whom David Lord did call,

The God incarnate, man divine,

And crown Him Lord of all.

The God incarnate, man divine,

And crown Him Lord of all.

Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget

The wormwood and the gall,

Go, spread your trophies at His feet

And crown Him Lord of all.

Go, spread your trophies at His feet

And crown Him Lord of all.

+ Preparation +

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit

C: Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Introit

P: Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!

C: He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light by night.

P: They asked, and he brought quail, and gave them bread from heaven in abundance.

C: He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed through the desert like a river.

P: For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham, his servant.

C: So he brought his people out with joy, his chosen ones with singing.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!

Kyrie

P: In peace let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P: For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

P: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

C: Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. Heavenly Father, though we do not deserve Your goodness, still You provide for all our needs of body and soul. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may acknowledge Your gifts, give thanks for all Your benefits, and serve You in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingIsaiah 55:1–5

“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle 1 Timothy 4:1–16

Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.

If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

Command and teach these things. Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. Practice these things, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse

Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go?

You have the words of eternal life.

Alleluia, alleluia.

Holy GospelMatthew 14:13-21

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fourteenth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

Now when Jesus heard [about the death of John], he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Children’s Hymn – God Loves Me Dearly (LSB 392)

God loves me dearly,

Grants me salvation,

God loves me dearly,

Loves even me. Refrain

Refrain: Therefore I’ll say again: God loves me dearly,

God loves me dearly, loves even me.

He sent forth Jesus,

My dear Redeemer,

He sent forth Jesus

And set me free. Refrain

Children’s Message – Pastor Scott

Hymn of the Day – Beautiful Savior (LSB 537)

Beautiful Savior, King of creation,

Son of God and Son of Man!

Truly I’d love Thee, truly I’d serve Thee,

Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows, fair are the woodlands,

Robed in flow’rs of blooming spring;

Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,

He makes our sorr’wing spirit sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fair is the moonlight,

Bright the sparkling stars on high;

Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer

Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,

Son of God and Son of Man!

Glory and honor, praise, adoration

Now and forevermore be Thine!

Sermon

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C:  We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow'r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;

grant us peace.

Distribution Hymn – Amazing Grace (LSB 744)

Amazing grace—how sweet the sound—

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost but now am found,

Was blind but now I see!

The Lord has promised good to me,

His Word my hope secures;

He will my shield and portion be

As long as life endures.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares

I have already come;

His grace has brought me safe thus far,

His grace will lead me home.

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail

And mortal life shall cease,

Amazing grace shall then prevail

In heaven’s joy and peace.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,

Bright shining as the sun,

We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise

Than when we’d first begun.

Blessing

Thank the Lord

Thank the Lord and sing His praise;

tell ev'ryone what He has done.

Let all who seek the Lord rejoice

and proudly bear His name.

He recalls His promises

and leads His people forth in joy

with shouts of thanksgiving.

Alleluia, alleluia.

Post-Communion Collect

P: Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (LSB 686)

Come, Thou Fount of ev’ry blessing,

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;

Streams of mercy, never ceasing,

Call for songs of loudest praise.

While the hope of endless glory

Fills my heart with joy and love,

Teach me ever to adore Thee;

May I still Thy goodness prove.

Here I raise my Ebenezer,

Hither by Thy help I’ve come;

And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,

Safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger,

Wand’ring from the fold of God;

He, to rescue me from danger,

Interposed His precious blood.

Oh, to grace how great a debtor

Daily I’m constrained to be;

Let that grace now like a fetter

Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee:

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;

Prone to leave the God I love.

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,

Seal it for Thy courts above.

Oh, that day when freed from sinning,

I shall see Thy lovely face;

Clothed then in the blood-washed linen,

How I’ll sing Thy wondrous grace!

Come, my Lord, no longer tarry;

Take my ransom’d soul away;

Send Thine angels soon to carry

Me to realms of endless day.
