Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
August 13, 2020
Sunday is going to be a pretty awesome day. We are going to have a confirmation and a baptism in the same family. David Moore is getting confirmed and his nephew, Colton is getting baptized.

David has been meeting with me for the last three years. Since he is the only one of confirmation age I met with him for 30 minutes in my office for catechizes and then downstairs in the youth room for ping pong and pool. By the way, David is good at both which he must get from his mom, Cyndi, who is an elite billiards player.

I can tell you that David is a great kid. He loves the outdoors. He and his brother, Spencer, are in the boy scouts along with fellow Glendale member, Tori Williams. They are always going camping, hiking, organizing servant events, and completing badges. David also loves fishing with his dad, Sherman. Covid hasn’t been so bad for David. He got to tag along on an 18 wheeler across the country. David is a joy for me to get to know and I pray for his continued faith development. Confirmation is when David publicly professes his faith and we support him in it.

Little Colton is David’s sister’s son. It will great to have Colton’s mom, Ashley at the baptism along with great grandpa and grandma, Spence and Sylvia Bach. Baptism, of course, is when we get to witness God’s words of promise make Colton a forgiven child of God. It’s beautiful to be there a see God working. We promise to support the faith in this family.
Please wear a mask during worship services.

Deacons' Ministry Renewed
A new opportunity for training and serving will be offered here at GLC starting with an all-day retreat September 12th. The Deacons’ Ministry is being renewed with both front-loaded training as well as ongoing training.

In the past under the direction of Pastor Emeritus Albers and Bill Lubben, more than 20 people served faithfully, with some continuing to offer support and friendship to the people under their care.

This new ministry will begin with no more than eight people who (a) have a compassionate heart toward others, (b) are willing to commit to the training for one year, and (c) will make a decision at the end of the training if they want to continue serving as commissioned, congregational deacons.

For those who want to hear more details, please contact Joel Hempel (trainer and coordinator) and/or attend an introduction to the training/ministry at Bible class on Sunday, August 16.

A signup sheet for deacons’ training/ministry along with a brief description is posted on the kiosk.
Thursday Evening Women's Bible Study
We want to extend an invitation to all women to join our Thursday evening Bible Study, currently meeting on Zoom. The book we're using is Jesus: A Study on the Words of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, published by CPH. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Cathie Albers (314-822-2033 or cathleenalbers@chater.net.)

Prelude – Lead On, O King Eternal

Greeting and Welcome

Lighting of the Candles

Hymn of InvocationThy Strong Word (LSB 578, v. 1-2)

Thy strong word did cleave the darkness;
At Thy speaking it was done.
For created light we thank Thee,
While Thine ordered seasons run.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Praise to Thee who light dost send!
Alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia without end!

Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness,
Dark as night and deep as death,
Broke the light of Thy salvation,
Breathed Thine own life-breathing breath.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Praise to Thee who light dost send!
Alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia without end!

+ Preparation +

Invocation
P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

Confession and Absolution
P:  It is good and right that we should make confession of our sins. The section on confession in the Small Catechism informs and directs us with these words, which summarizes it well.
C:  Confession has two parts. First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven.
P:  Humble yourselves then before God, confess your sins to Him, and implore His forgiveness.
C:  O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a troubled and penitent sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your present and eternal punishment. By nature, I am a sinful creature. By thought, word, and deed, I have continually transgressed Your Law. For the sake of the sufferings and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, be gracious and merciful to me, a penitent and contrite being. Forgive me all of my sins, and grant me the power of Your Holy Spirit that I may amend my sinful life.
P:  God be gracious to you and strengthen your faith.
C:  Amen.
P:  As you believe, so let it be. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

+ Word +

First Reading Deuteronomy 4:23-31
Take care, lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and make a carved image, the form of anything that the Lord your God has forbidden you. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
“When you father children and children's children, and have grown old in the land, if you act corruptly by making a carved image in the form of anything, and by doing what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God, so as to provoke him to anger, I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will soon utterly perish from the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess. You will not live long in it, but will be utterly destroyed. And the Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the Lord will drive you. And there you will serve gods of wood and stone, the work of human hands, that neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you will return to the Lord your God and obey his voice. For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 11:1-2a, 13-15, 28-32
I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel?
Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them. For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?
As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy. For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.
The Baptism of Colton Gauge Walker Phillips

Greeting and Prayer
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.
C: Amen.
P: By water and the Spirit we share Christ's death.
C: And through his resurrection we have new life.
P: O almighty and merciful God, we thank and praise you that you extend your Family through this means of grace and that you have called Colton Gauge Walker Phillips to be your child through the water of Holy Baptism and the power of your Word. We humbly pray that you would keep him always aware of this covenant of love that you have made with him and nurture the seed of faith you are planting in his heart, that he may faithfully grow to lead a life pleasing to you and, finally, with all your saints obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C: Amen.

Blessing
P: Colton Gauge Walker Phillips, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead + and upon your heart + as a sign, symbol and seal of God's love for you.

Matthew 28:18-20
Our Lord commanded baptism, saying to his disciples in the last chapter of Matthew, "All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age."

Mark 10:13-16
Hear also his invitation, "People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.' And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them."

Exhortation to Sponsors
P:   It is your task to confess with the whole Christian Church our faith in the Triune God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - in whose name he is to be baptized. Moreover, you are at all times to remember him in your prayers, call to his attention his baptism and, as much as you are able, to lend your counsel and support that he may be nurtured in the true knowledge and love of God through Jesus Christ, that he may grow in faith and witness for as long as he lives. This, then, you intend gladly and willingly to do?
Sponsors:  Yes, with the help of God.
P:   May God enable you to will and to do this faithful and loving work and with his grace fulfill what we are not able to do.

Confession of Faith
P:   Parents, in obedience to Christ's command and with faith in his promises, you have presented Colton here today to receive Holy Baptism and all the gifts that God conveys through it. On his behalf, therefore, I ask you to join with me and the rest of this congregation in the confession of the faith in which we baptize. Do you renounce the devil, all his works and all his ways?
C: I do renounce him.

P: Do you believe in God the Father?
C: Yes, I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son?
C: Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God The Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and dead.

P: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
C: Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Rite of Baptism
P: Who brings this child to be baptized?
Parent: I do, his mother.
P: And what have you named him?
Parent: Colton Gauge Walker Phillips
P: Colton Gauge Walker Phillips, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with his grace to life everlasting.
Colton, peace be with you. Amen.

Presentation of Baptismal Candle
P: Receive this burning light to show that you have received Christ who is the Light of the world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming, that you may meet Him with joy and enter with Him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which shall have no end.

Presentation to the Congregation
Colton Gauge Walker Phillips, son of Ashley Moore, was born on September 3, 2015 in Lake St. Louis, Missouri. Colton's sponsors are Kira Moore, Spencer Moore, and David Moore.

Prayer
Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise You that You graciously preserve and enlarge Your family and have granted Colton the new birth in Holy Baptism and made him a member of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir of Your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore You that, as he has now become Your child, You would keep him in his baptismal grace, that according to Your good pleasure he may faithfully grow to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of Your holy name and finally, with all Your saints, obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Baptized: April 23, 2006
Confirmation verse: Psalm 55:22

Holy Gospel – Matthew 15:21–28
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifteenth chapter.
C: Glory to You, O Lord.

And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn of the Day – Great Is Thy Faithfulness (LSB 809)

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee.
Thou changest not: Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.

Refrain:  Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. Refrain

The Words of Our Lord
P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Lord’s Prayer
C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini
P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.
