Dead Man Walking - article by Joel Hempel

The Lord is risen! He has risen indeed!

Those words roll off our tongues so effortlessly. But it was a different story that first Easter morning. The women were confused (Mark 16:18), the disciples thought the news of Jesus’ resurrection was nonsense (Luke 24:11), Peter was stunned (Luke 24:12), Thomas doubted (John 20:25) – and our reaction would have been similar had we seen a dead man walking. People don’t die on Friday and come back to life by the end of the weekend.

But the resurrected Jesus was not a zombie returning from the grave like a Hollywood undead character. The resurrected Jesus was not some grand ruse perpetuated by heartbroken disciples or the wishful thinking of Jesus’ followers. How do I know? Well, it’s not because of all the reasons various scholars and biblical historians offer through their research and writing, as convincing as they are. However, if you want to read about some of the evidence supporting Christ’s resurrection, check out the links below. *

But for me, I don’t need empirical proof. I absolutely know Jesus rose from the dead not only because Scripture states it but also because I have personally experienced resurrection victory in my life. What that personal experience is I will save for another article. However, my faith experience is about me! What about you?

What do you know to be true about Jesus’ death and resurrection?

As you all know, we had a warm end of winter and then a deep cold at the beginning of spring. So, the daffodils in our front yard that had bloomed took a hit and were lying in the dirt when we came out of the house that frigid morning. But you also know what happened a few days later. They stood right back up as soon as the sun warmed them up. You can’t keep a good daffodil down.

You and I are like good daffodils. As of today, we are standing tall – more or less – but one day, we will be beaten down by life and knocked down into the dirt by death. And unless Jesus returns soon, all of us will have to spend some time in the dirt. But don’t get used to it, and don’t get too comfortable! Because the moment we die, time stops, and the next moment the resurrected Jesus will be raising us to life everlasting.

That’s why we can sing songs of joy during Easter even as we remember loved ones who have died and face our own mortality. Jesus IS risen! And if you can confess that Jesus is risen indeed, then you have a Hallelujah time coming.

Refrain:  Jesus is risen and we shall arise:

Golden Jerusalem, Jesus the Lamb,

River of life, saints and archangels,

+ Preparation +

P:  In the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

P:  Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C:  who made heaven and earth.

P:  If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

C:  But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

P:  Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

C:  Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

P:  Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy Church, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C:  Amen.

Introit

P:  Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

C:  Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!

P:  Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!

C:  Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!

P:  Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!

C:  Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered.

P:  He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P:  Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation—if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.

Gloria in Excelsis

To God on high be glory

And peace to all the earth;

Goodwill from God in heaven

Proclaimed at Jesus' birth!

We praise and bless You, Father;

Your holy name we sing—

Our thanks for Your great glory,

Lord God, our heav'nly King.

To You, O sole-begotten,

The Father's Son, we pray;

O Lamb of God, our Savior,

You take our sins away.

Have mercy on us, Jesus;

Receive our heartfelt cry,

Where You in pow'r are seated

At God's right hand on high—

For You alone are holy,

You only are the Lord.

Forever and forever,

Be worshiped and adored;

You with the Holy Spirit

Alone are Lord Most High,

In God the Father's glory.

"Amen!" our glad reply.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Let us pray. Almighty God, grant that we who have celebrated the Lord’s resurrection may by Your grace confess in our life and conversation that Jesus is Lord and God; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

First Reading1 Samuel 1:1–20

There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. He had two wives. The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the Lord. On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”

After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.”

As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put away your wine from you.” But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” Then Eli answered, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.” And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord remembered her. And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle 1 Peter 1:3–9

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

These things are written that you may believe that

Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Holy GospelJohn 20:19-31

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twentieth chapter.

C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from anyone, it is withheld.”

Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

P:     This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – Do Lord!: Psalm 27 (AGPS 89)

Refrain:  Do Lord, Oh, do Lord, Oh, do remember me!

              Do Lord, Oh, do Lord, Oh, do remember me!

              Do Lord, Oh, do Lord, Oh, do remember me!

              Look away beyond the blue!

You’re my light and my salvation, I won’t be afraid!

You’re the stronghold of my life, by You all things were made.

Foes attack me, hassle me, but I will never fade,

For I move in the strength of the Lord. Refrain

Children’s Sermon – Tim Cosby

Hymn of the Day – My Faith Looks Up to Thee (LSB 702)

My faith looks up to Thee,

Thou Lamb of Calvary,

Savior divine.

Now hear me while I pray;

Take all my guilt away;

O let me from this day

Be wholly Thine!

May Thy rich grace impart

Strength to my fainting heart;

My zeal inspire!

As Thou hast died for me,

Oh, may my love to Thee

Pure, warm, and changeless be,

A living fire!

While life’s dark maze I tread

And griefs around me spread,

Be Thou my guide;

Bid darkness turn to day,

Wipe sorrow’s tears away,

Nor let me ever stray

From Thee aside.

When ends life’s transient dream,

When death’s cold, sullen stream

Shall o’er me roll,

Blest Savior, then, in love,

Fear and distrust remove;

O bear me safe above,

A ransomed soul!

Preface

P:  The Lord be with you.

C:  And also with you.

P:  Lift up your hearts.

C:  We lift them to the Lord.

P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P:  It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth adored;

Heav'n and earth with full acclaim shout the glory of Your name.

Sing hosanna in the highest, sing hosanna to the Lord;

Truly blest is He who comes in the name of the Lord!

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P:  Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed. By His death, He has redeemed us from bondage to sin and death, and by His resurrection, He has delivered us into new life in Him. Grant us to keep the Feast in sincerity and truth, faithfully eating His body given into death and drinking His life's blood poured out for our salvation until we pass through death to the promised land of life eternal. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  Amen.

Agnus Dei

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

You take the sin of the world away;

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray.

O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God,

You take the sin of the world away;

Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ,

And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Jesus Comes Today with Healing (LSB 620)

Jesus comes today with healing,

Knocking at my door, appealing,

Off’ring pardon, grace, and peace.

He Himself makes preparation,

And I hear His invitation:

“Come and taste the blessèd feast.”

Christ Himself, the priest presiding,

Yet in bread and wine abiding

In this holy sacrament,

Gives the bread of life, once broken,

And the cup, the precious token

Of His sacred covenant.

Under bread and wine, though lowly,

I receive the Savior holy,

Blood and body, giv’n for me,

Very Lamb of God from heaven,

Who to bitter death was given,

Hung upon the cursèd tree.

God descends with heav’nly power,

Gives Himself to me this hour

In this ordinary sign.

On my tongue His pledge receiving,

I accept His grace, believing

That I taste His love divine.

Let me praise God’s boundless favor,

Whose own feast of love I savor,

Bidden by His gracious call.

Wedding garments He provides me,

With a robe of white He hides me,

Fits me for the royal hall.

Now have I found consolation,

Comfort in my tribulation,

Balm to heal the troubled soul.

God, my shield from ev’ry terror,

Cleanses me from sin and error,

Makes my wounded spirit whole.

Blessing

Nunc Dimittis

O Lord, now let Your servant

Depart in heav'nly peace,

For I have seen the glory

Of Your redeeming grace:

A light to lead the Gentiles

Unto Your holy hill,

The glory of Your people,

Your chosen Israel.

All glory to the Father,

All glory to the Son,

All glory to the Spirit,

Forever Three in One;

For as in the beginning,

Is now, shall ever be,

God's triune name resounding

Through all eternity.

Post-Communion Collect

P:  Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

Benedicamus and Benediction

P:  Let us bless the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C:  Amen.

Closing Hymn – Be Still, My Soul (LSB 752)

Be still, my soul; the Lord is on your side;

Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;

Leave to your God to order and provide;

In ev’ry change He faithful will remain.

Be still, my soul; your best, your heav’nly Friend

Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul; your God will undertake

To guide the future as He has the past.

Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake;

All now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know

His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul; though dearest friends depart

And all is darkened in this vale of tears;

Then you will better know His love, His heart,

Who comes to soothe your sorrows and your fears.

Be still, my soul; your Jesus can repay

From His own fullness all He takes away.

Be still, my soul; the hour is hast’ning on

When we shall be forever with the Lord,

When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,

Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.

Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past,

All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.
