Restored! - article by Joel Hempel

This past Sunday, Pastor Scott shared a message with us that was both helpful and meaningful. In talking about how God mends together our brokenness and heals our wounds, his sermon brought to mind a specific kind of brokenness that can be devastating. It is the brokenness of one’s soul.

Because the word "soul" is used in different ways in Scripture to describe various aspects of oneself, it is impossible to give a definitive definition. But one way to think about the soul is that it is a person’s essential self, the core of one’s being. It is a person’s spiritual identity in relation to or apart from God.

The soul is also where questions about one’s existence live, such as: Who am I? Do I matter? What is my value? What does my life mean? What do I believe about God, and more importantly, what does God believe about me? These questions are far more than painful feelings or worrisome thoughts. They are challenges to existence. Thus, when people are troubled by harsh experiences in life or matters of faith, their soul is troubled or wounded. And sometimes, a soul can be broken. But broken is not the same as destroyed.

In Pastor’s sermon, he referenced the Japanese art form, Kintsugi. He shared how these artists work with broken pottery. Rather than throw away a broken bowl, they mend together the broken pieces with a unique mix of lacquer and gold, resulting in a recreation of a more glorious and valuable work of art.

If you click on the link below,* you will be introduced to a Japanese artist, Makoto Fujimora. His testimony at the end of the video declares: “Christ came not just to fix us but to restore us, to create something new which is more valuable than what we began with.”

If you are going through a soul-wrenching experience or period in your life, or when another wave of challenge comes your way, God will restore your hope and heal your soul. But in the midst of brokenness or loss, answers and relief can be slow to come. What often helps, though, is talking with someone, someone who can help you address the brokenness. As Pastor reminded us, that is why God has placed us in community.

God’s intention is to create something new out of our brokenness. Creation and re-creation through the death and resurrection of Christ is God’s specialty.

Whatever darkness or brokenness is your current experience, God is in the midst of it with you. If you are not sure of that because your faith is weak, you are in good company with the disciple Thomas who doubted (John 20:24-25), and his own family who were uncertain (Mark 3:21). Jesus’ unrelenting love for them is the same as his love for those of us who need help to trust and receive the grace of God’s re-creation.

Lutheran Foundation Playground Grant

The Lutheran Foundation of St. Louis has agreed to provide a $50,000 challenge matching grant toward the playground improvements the congregation approved. As part of the grant process, the Lutheran Foundation will match any individual member gifts up to $5,000 per gift until the $50,000 grant total is met. By way of example, if we have 10 members contribute $5,000 each, the Lutheran Foundation will match the entire $50,000. Please note this matching provision does not apply to the bequest funds the congregation has dedicated toward the playground. Congregation members can contribute toward the playground fund any time before August 1, 2022, which is the deadline the Lutheran Foundation has set for contributions it will match up to $5,000 per donor toward the $50,000 total.

Additional information on the Lutheran Fund matching grant can be found on the bulletin board in the atrium. You can also reach out to Kelly Climer if you have any additional questions on the grant.

Hymn of Invocation – For All the Faithful Women (WOV 692, verses 1-3)

For all the faithful women who served in days of old,
To you shall thanks be given; to all, their story told.
They served with strength and gladness in tasks your wisdom gave.
To you their lives bore witness, proclaimed your pow’r to save.

We praise your name for Miriam who sang triumphantly
While Pharaoh’s vaunted army lay drowned beneath the sea.
As Israel marched to freedom, her chains of bondage gone,
So may we reach the kingdom your mighty arm has won.

To Hannah, praying childless before the throne of grace,
You gave a son whose service would be before your face.
Grant us her perseverance; Lord, teach us how to pray,
To trust in your deliv’rance when darkness hides our way.

Confession and Absolution – Psalm 119:149
P:  Hear my voice according to Your steadfast love;
C:  O Lord, according to Your justice give me life.

A time for silent reflection.

P:  Let us confess our sins unto the Lord.
C:  I confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned in thought, word, and deed by my fault, by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault; wherefore I pray God Almighty to have mercy on me, forgive me all my sins, and bring me to everlasting life. Amen.
P:  The almighty and merciful Lord grant you pardon, forgiveness, and remission of all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.
P:  May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
C:  Amen.

        I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.
C:  With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O Lord!
        I will keep your statutes.
P:  I call to you; save me,
        that I may observe your testimonies.
C:  I rise before dawn and cry for help;
        I hope in your words.
P:  My eyes are awake before the watches of the night,
        that I may meditate on your promise.
C:  Hear my voice according to your steadfast love;
        O Lord, according to your justice give me life.
All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

        I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day
P:  The Lord be with you.
C:  And also with you.
P:  Let us pray. O Lord, let Your merciful ears be attentive to the prayers of Your servants, and by Your Word and Spirit teach us how to pray that our petitions may be pleasing before You; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

First Reading Judges 5:1–11
Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day:
“That the leaders took the lead in Israel, that the people offered themselves willingly, bless the Lord!
“Hear, O kings; give ear, O princes; to the Lord I will sing; I will make melody to the Lord, the God of Israel.
“Lord, when you went out from Seir, when you marched from the region of Edom, the earth trembled and the heavens dropped, yes, the clouds dropped water. The mountains quaked before the Lord, even Sinai before the Lord, the God of Israel.
“In the days of Shamgar, son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were abandoned, and travelers kept to the byways. The villagers ceased in Israel; they ceased to be until I arose; I, Deborah, arose as a mother in Israel. When new gods were chosen, then war was in the gates. Was shield or spear to be seen among forty thousand in Israel? My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel who offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless the Lord.
“Tell of it, you who ride on white donkeys, you who sit on rich carpets and you who walk by the way. To the sound of musicians at the watering places, there they repeat the righteous triumphs of the Lord, the righteous triumphs of his villagers in Israel.
“Then down to the gates marched the people of the Lord.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle – Colossians 2:6-15
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – Luke 11:1-13
P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the eleventh chapter.
C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:
“Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”
And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed
C:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb (LSB 740)

I am Jesus’ little lamb,
Ever glad at heart I am;
For my Shepherd gently guides me,
Knows my need and well provides me,
Loves me ev’ry day the same,
Even calls me by my name.

Day by day, at home, away,
Jesus is my staff and stay.
When I hunger, Jesus feeds me,
Into pleasant pastures leads me;
When I thirst, He bids me go
Where the quiet waters flow.

Children’s Sermon – Pastor Scott

Hymn of the Day – Christ Be My Leader (LSB 861)

Christ be my Leader by night as by day;
Safe through the darkness, for He is the way.
Gladly I follow, my future His care,
Darkness is daylight when Jesus is there.

Christ be my Teacher in age as in youth,
Drifting or doubting, for He is the truth.
Grant me to trust Him; though shifting as sand,
Doubt cannot daunt me; in Jesus I stand.

Christ be my Savior in calm as in strife;
Death cannot hold me, for He is the life.
Nor darkness nor doubting nor sin and its stain
Can touch my salvation: with Jesus I reign.

Preface
P:  The Lord be with you.
C:  And also with you.
P:  Lift up your hearts.
C:  We lift them to the Lord.
P:  Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C:  It is right to give Him thanks and praiseimH.
P:  You are worthy, O Lord, of all honor and glory, praise and adoration, but especially do we praise Your goodness for giving to us Your own Son to be our Savior and Redeemer and the messenger of Your saving will. Having known the mystery of His coming by the voice of Your Word, we join with prophets, apostles, evangelists, all the saints in heaven, and with angels and archangels to laud Your glory and join to sing with one voice, now and forever:

Sanctus
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of pow’r and might:
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.
Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving
P:  Before the foundations of the world were laid, O Lord, You knew the cost of Your mercy to redeem Your creation. Still You loved us, made all things, and bore with us sinners, who deserved only wrath, until Your own Son was born of the Virgin, to fulfill all righteousness for us and pay the cost of sin with His own blood. Having known all that He bore on our behalf and here receiving the blessings He has promised in the Communion of His body and blood, we come at His invitation to receive a foretaste of the eternal feast, according to His own words and promise. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord
P:  Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
     In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ
P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
C:  Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
P:  Having in remembrance the promise of redemption renewed throughout the generations through the voice of the prophets, we confess Christ’s incarnation and righteous life, His holy and sacrificial death, His burial in the grave, His mighty resurrection, His glorious ascension to the place of glory You prepared, and His promise to return again to finish all that He began. Hear us in His name and grant us Your Spirit and all needful grace that by this Holy Communion today we be strengthened in unity and be equipped for Your service here and in the life to come, when we shall be reunited with all who have gone before and dwell with You on high, world without end.
C:  Amen.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini
P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C:  Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – By Grace I’m Saved (LSB 566)

By grace I’m saved, grace free and boundless;
My soul, believe and doubt it not.
Why stagger at this word of promise?
Has Scripture ever falsehood taught?
No! Then this word must true remain:
By grace you too will life obtain.

By grace! None dare lay claim to merit;
Our works and conduct have no worth.
God in His love sent our Redeemer,
Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth;
His death did for our sins atone,
And we are saved by grace alone.

By grace God’s Son, our only Savior,
Came down to earth to bear our sin.
Was it because of your own merit
That Jesus died your soul to win?
No, it was grace, and grace alone,
That brought Him from His heav’nly throne.

By grace! This ground of faith is certain;
As long as God is true, it stands.
What saints have penned by inspiration,
What in His Word our God commands,
Our faith in what our God has done
Depends on grace—grace through His Son.

By grace to timid hearts that tremble,
In tribulation’s furnace tried,
By grace, in spite of fear and trouble,
The Father’s heart is open wide.
Where could I help and strength secure
If grace were not my anchor sure?

By grace! On this I’ll rest when dying;
In Jesus’ promise I rejoice;
For though I know my heart’s condition,
I also know my Savior’s voice.
My heart is glad, all grief has flown
Since I am saved by grace alone.

Blessing

Post-Communion Collect
P:  Let us pray. Father of mercy and God of all consolation, hear the prayers of Your people and inhabit our hearts with Your Spirit so that we may have words to pray and hearts to believe that You hear and answer us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

Benediction
P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.
C:  Amen.

Closing Hymn – For All the Faithful Women (WOV 692, verses 4-5)

We sing of Mary, mother, fair maiden, full of grace.
She bore the Christ, our brother, who came to save our race.
May we, with her, surrender ourselves to your command
And lay upon your altar our gifts of heart and hand.

We praise the other Mary who came at Easter dawn
And near the tomb did tarry, but found her Lord was gone.
As joyfully she saw him in resurrection light,
May we by faith behold him, the day who ends all night.
