Faith Formation Ministry

One Family Bible Class

As Good Friday approaches we will be studying the teachings of Jesus in the Temple during the week that climaxed with His arrest and crucifixion. We will focus this week on the parable of the wicked tenants from Luke 20:9-20. Read this passage at home with your family and ask the questions: "Am I more concerned about getting the inheritance of eternal life for myself or simply serving the Master? How is the kingdom of God a free gift?"

Lenten Series - Places of the Passion

This year's Lenten series is drawn from Luke's account of our Lord's Passion. Each week, a different section of the Gospel is read; and each week, Luke will take us to a different place-the Places of the Passion. However, the focus will not be on those physical places. Instead, throughout the series, the hearer is invited to gaze in wonder on the spiritual work that our Lord does in those places. Jesus will share His strength in our times of weakness. When Jesus enters a place, He never leaves it as He found it. The most troubling places in our lives become the most amazing places of God's grace when Jesus visits them. Week after week, hearers will enter the places of the Passion, only to discover their Lord . . . waiting for them . . . willing to share with them a love that was set in place before the foundations of the world.
  • Midweek of Lent 5 (Luke 22:63-23:25) "The Trial: A Place of God's Will"
  • Holy Thursday (Luke 22:7-23) "The Last Supper: A Place of Forgiveness"
  • Good Friday (Luke 23:44-49) "Golgotha: A Place of Simple Love"
  • Easter (Luke 24:1-11) "The Empty Tomb: A Place of Remembering"
Stewardship Sentence

Luke 20:16 "He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others." When they heard this, they said, "Surely not!" The crowds were shocked at Jesus' parable because they took the grace of God for granted. They never thought that God would actually take "the vineyard" away from them. But we only have access to God by faith. And we can drive faith and the Holy Spirit away. That is the warning of the parable. The Lord has graciously given us His Kingdom - let us not take it for granted, but instead respond with humble thanksgiving!

Women's Evening Bible Study
The Thursday evening Bible study began a new study on February 18. The study guide is "God's Love Through You: A Guide to 1 John." All women are welcome; gathering together is a great opportunity to share prayer concerns and be strengthened by God's Work and by each other. Eighteen women currently are a part of this group; not all can attend every time and that is understood. We meet on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7:00pm.

Women's Tuesday Morning Bible Study
Beginning Tuesday, February 23 at 9:15am we started a new seven week Bible study. Please consider joining us as we explore "Discerning the Voice of God" presented by Priscilla Shirer. Through this study you will become more familiar with God's Holy Spirit, His character, language, and tone of voice. Call Carol Froesel or Jeanne Clark if you have any questions.

Pre-Lenten Service Meal

We have added one more pre-service Lenten meal for this coming Wednesday, March 16. Fried Chicken is on the menu.

Holy Week Worship Schedule

Maundy Thursday - 7:00pm
Good Friday - 7:00pm
Holy Saturday - 5:00pm
Easter Sunday - ONE SERVICE ONLY - 9:15am
Please note that the Easter Sunday service time is a change from what was previously announced. This also affects the Easter Breakfast, which will now take place immediately after the service, rather than between services as originally announced. Thank you!

Palm Sunday Fair and Egg Hunt

Glendale Lutheran Church is having the Palm Sunday Fair and Egg Hunt on March 20 after the service. There will be coffee, tea, lemonade, fruit and pastries in the gym. There will be several craft tables for the kids and Goliath waiting to be slain on the stage. Plan to join us.
Thanks to everyone who took the empty eggs to fill. Please be sure to have them back in their baskets by March 16.
THE EGG HUNT WILL BE INSIDE IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER.

Youth News
Easter Breakfast

This year's Easter Breakfast is sponsored by the GLC Youth! If you'd like to donate one of the 18 egg casseroles we need, please sign up on the kiosk at church. Planning to join us? The same sign-up sheet has a spot for your family name and how many will be attending so we have an idea for planning purposes. A free will offering will be taken at the Easter Breakfast. All funds raised will go towards sending GLC Youth to the National Youth Gathering this summer.
Thank you!

LFCS Counseling Office

The process of adding additional shared space with CCLS requires us to re-locate the current space allocated for LFCS professional counseling. After careful consideration of a variety of locations, with input from interested members, the decision has been made to create a new space on the first floor of our new building. Since our pastor moved his office and conference area to the main floor corner of our new building, the space he had vacated has not had any dedicated use. Lutheran Family and Children Services has agreed to fund the cost of creating a partition in that space. This will provide an outside entrance for clients as well as a bit larger and more useful space for professional counseling of both adults and children. The project will result in a private office for counseling as well as an anti-room that could have multiple uses. We will be completing this project in the next few weeks .

Worship Leaders through April
We are continuing our trial usage of Volunteer Spot. All services through April are now available as sign-up spots. The Worship Committee will still fill in any open spots from the lists of volunteers, so if you have a known conflict, selecting a spot well in advance might prevent some last-minute switching needs.

Please sign up here. If you prefer, you can call Michelle in the office to get your name on the schedule. Thank you!

Children's Worship Materials
We are looking for someone to take charge of the children's worship materials at the back  of the church. This would entail periodically checking the bags to ensure each is stocked with paper, crayons, etc. If you are interesting in serving this way, please contact the church office.

110 Responders to the GLC Vision Survey! Thanks!

110 members of the GLC family responded to the vision survey. Outstanding! We on the Vision Task Force are very thankful and grateful to you. Thanks! What happens now? The Vision Task Force will meet Monday evening, March 14 in order to do a complete review of the data and prepare for the next step. The Vision Task Force will present the results to the Leadership Council at its meeting on March 21. We then intend to present the results to the congregation on April 17. The result should then lead us into a planning process to help us achieve, with the aid of the Holy Spirit, what we wish for Glendale in 2021.

Birthday Bags and Meal Kits - Thank You!

To all the many people who participated in the gathering of the Birthday Bags and Meal Kits for Operation Food Search (OFS) - a great big THANK YOU! for your generosity. On Wednesday, March 9, we delivered 57 kits (a birthday bag and meal each) to OFS. They were thrilled. From Judy Coyman, who heads this project for Operation Food Search, "These bags are fantastic! There were oohs and aahs over how nice they are. We are so grateful for your helping us to feed struggling families and kids and to brighten the birthdays of children who have so little otherwise." This was a joint effort between members of Glendale Lutheran Church and the families from our CCLS preschool. Many thanks to all who made it such a success.

Special Music Concert

Joy Elowsky will be singing in A Lent-en Concert this Sunday, March 13 at 3:00pm at Christ the King Church, 7316 Balson Ave in U City. The concert  will feature works by Buxtehude, Bermudez, Britten and Mozart. Other performers include Thomas Jostlein, principal horn from St. Louis symphony and Sylvian Iticovici, STL symphony violinist. Admission is free, and there will be a Lent-Il soup supper afterwards.

Table of Duties

Certain Passages of Scripture for Various Holy Orders and Positions, by Which These People Are to Be Admonished, as a Special Lesson, about Their Office and Service

For Husbands

Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. (1 Peter 3:7)
Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. (Colossians 3:19)

For Wives

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. (Ephesians 5:22; 1 Peter 3:5-6)

For Parents

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4)

For Children

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother" (this is the first commandment with a promise), "that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land." (Ephesians 6:1-3)
