A Message from Dr. Biermann
In the spring they are fresh, lush, and vibrant green. They look like life. In the summer the green deepens to a darker shade and the unrelenting sun, storm-driven winds, and hungry insects take their toll. Yet, the shade they give still invites the hot and tired; and the umbrella they make shelters the pedestrian surprised by a cloudburst. In October, their glory is manifest and for a few weeks the plumage of the trees rivals that of any rare and exotic bird. And then comes November. In November, the color fades. In November, the life is gone. In November, all that is left is for the spent leaves to shake loose from their twigs and limbs and to waft and tumble down-down onto the street, into the gutter, onto our yards, into our breezeways. In November, leaves are nothing but nuisance.
But November leaves are not altogether done. They have at least one more task. As they litter our lawns and overflow our compostable yard bags they serve as messengers. They declare the stark and inescapable reality of the brevity and fragility of life. We may balk at the message and resent the messenger, but we can't deny the truth. In November, the sober and sad truth descends on us like the leaves themselves: life does not last. What starts unspoiled and full of promise always unravels and collapses into death and decay. The brown and gray leaves that crunch and crackle around our feet as we walk, that carpet our grass and flowerbeds, and that choke the downspouts on our houses will not let us forget. Life does not last. Death is coming. It's not a happy message. But it is the truth. The all-too-brief life of a leaf is only slightly shorter than the life of a man. November leaves force us to face facts.
The leaves of late autumn do their duty and deliver their message. But, their message is limited and partial. We need to look elsewhere for an answer to their severe and unsettling communication. We need to look to the Creator of the leaves and the Creator of our lives. His word to us is not hopelessness; it is not despair; it is not defeat; it is not death. His word to us is life-new life better than any spring. His word is new life in the reality of his promise. November leaves have their message to tell, but God's Word has a better and fuller message of reconciliation, restoration, and renewal. The truth of God's Word changes everything and helps us bear everything-even the hard reality of November leaves.

Faith Formation Ministry
One Family Bible Class
Dr. Biermann leads the Bible Class this morning in the Family Life Center. Grab a cup of coffee and join us.
Sunday School
Preschool through 1st grade children will meet in the lower level of the Parish House (under the gym). Grades 2 through 6 will meet in the lower level of the new building across from the elevator, room 012. High School youth will gather in the Youth Room. Confirmation class for 7th and 8th grade youth will be in the conference room next to Pastor's office, room 113.
Stewardship Sentence
Matthew 21:3 "If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord needs them,' and he will send them at once."" Just a colt and her foal. How significant could they be? Could they really be used by the Lord for some great, heavenly purpose? This is one facet of stewardship we often forget: the blessing it is to us to be of service in the Lord's kingdom. What honor the Lord bestows upon us by using our gifts for His goals!

Pastoral Care
If you need pastoral care for any reason, don't hesitate to contact the church office or one of the vacancy pastors directly. Pastor Biermann will be at the church on Monday and Thursday mornings most weeks, and Pastor Erkkinen is available on campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

CCLS Sunday Brunch Celebration on December 4
Glendale Lutheran Church is going to be celebrating CCLS Sunday on December 4. Immediately following the church service there will be a continental breakfast served in the gym. We are looking for willing bakers or buyers to help by bringing a treat to be served to the CCLS families and staff as well as our members. There is a sign-up sheet on the kiosk if you are able and willing to help. Thank you.

Christmas Potluck
December 7 at 5:00pm will be our Christmas Potluck celebration. At this potluck, we would like to put together Christmas bags for our shut-ins like we did last year. The tote bags will be provided and members of Glendale are asked to bring small gifts to fill them for the shut-ins & homebound, i.e. cookies, candy, note cards, pens, tissues, activity books, etc.--Let your imagination be your guide.
Even if you cannot make the potluck, you can still donate items--leave them (clearly marked) in the small kitchen.
We have approximately 20 individuals to provide for. Thank you for your help. See you December 7 and 21 at 5:00pm for potluck dinners and December 14 for a dinner organized by GLC Youth.

Operation Christmas Child 
Thank you, thank you! On very short notice, Glendale Lutheran Church gathered 43 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. And be truthful--who had the most fun, "giver" or "getter"?
Now, all of you, the whole congregation can begin to gather "bargains" for next year's boxes and turn 43 into 100 or 143! (Blessings tend to multiply.) Again, thank you. A list of suggestions will be set out after the first of the year to give us a headstart.
Blessings on your efforts. P.S., tracking codes have been attached to some of the boxes so we'll be able to know where and when they arrive. Look for updates.

LFCS Season of Sharing - December 11 Giving Deadline
GLC has been asked to participate this year in Lutheran Family and Children's Services Season of Sharing program. Gift cards are needed from stores such as Walmart, Target, Dollar General, and/or grocery stores. These gift cards will then be distributed to over 700 needy people. We have placed a box on a table near the front entrance where you may deposit gift cards, or you can deliver the cards to the Church Office. Gift cards may also be mailed to the Church Office designating them for Season of Sharing. Monetary gifts may be made payable to LFCS with "Season of Sharing" in the memo line. Lutheran Family hopes to raise over $20,000 to provide needed funding for families who are struggling with the basic necessities of life. All gifts are requested before Sunday,
December 11, so they can be sent to LFCS and the distribution process can begin.

Community
Lutheran South Advent Band Concert
The LHSS Music Department proudly announces its annual Advent Band Concert. The concert is scheduled for Friday, December 9 at 7:00pm and will be performed in the Concordia Center at Concordia Lutheran Church in Kirkwood. The concert of traditional Christmas music and other band literature will feature the school's Wind Symphony, Concert Band, and Jazz Band. The bands are conducted by John W. Miller and Matthew C. Janssen.
CCLS Dinner Auction
The 2017 Hearts on Fire CCLS Dinner Auction will be held Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Orlando Gardens Banquet Center in south St. Louis county. Please mark your calendar and make plans to attend or support this special fundraising event for the CCLS community. Tickets are $70 per person or $650 for a table of 10. Immanuel Boar's Head Christmas Festival
The Christmas Festival of the ages, the Boar's Head Festival, will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Charles, December 9, 10 and 11. There will be a 7:30 performance each evening with afternoon performances at 4:00pm both Saturday and Sunday. A dress rehearsal (tickets required) will be held at 7:30pm on December 8. Tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis starting at 8:00am on Tuesday, November 1. Call 636-946-2656 or come to the Immanuel Church office. Get your tickets early! They go fast! There is no charge for the tickets (limit 5 per person).
