At least that's what everyone who's not paying something to the NFL typically chooses to call it. Refer to the NFL championship game by its actual name, (yes, that would be Super Bowl) and you risk being dragged into a legal mess by the NFL which has a long and sordid track record of ruthlessly defending their name and copyrights from any infringement. By NFL rules, a church (or any group trying to convey "a message") is not allowed to show the game...such actions, apparently, could damage the NFL in some way. One might conclude that the cherished trademarks of the NFL are more hallowed than the church. But, of course, the concern is not the preservation of the League's honor (an oxymoron, I suspect), but the preservation of money. No, I'm not anti-football or opposed to people gathering to enjoy watching a televised sporting event. But, perhaps there is something to be gained by stopping to reflect for a moment on the difference between the rituals and events that our world has to offer as significant and meaningful-from inaugurations to Olympics to Mardi Gras parades-and those events that our Lord has made holy by the promise of his presence. There is no comparison. It is remarkable, then, that so many people continue to embrace empty and fraudulent rituals and moments in lieu of the ones made sacred for us by Christ himself. This Sunday, God invites you to a genuine celebration: Christ himself is going to feed you with his own Body and Blood. All your brothers and sisters are going to be there. You don't want to miss it. Most don't realize it, but the people of this world are starving for what God freely gives. Be sure to celebrate what counts. |
Faith Formation Ministry Bible Class and Sunday School
Join us as we grow in our faith and knowledge of God's word.
Stewardship Sentence Matthew 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." We cannot keep the Law of God perfectly. We are sinners. For us to be saved, Jesus had to fill up the Law in our place. Now the threat of the Law is abolished - and the Law itself is upheld. For in Christ now we do desire to fulfill the Law, to live out a godly Christian life - precisely because we are so full of thanksgiving toward God for His salvation in Christ.
