| | Pastor Scott's Message I'm excited to bring something new to Glendale Lutheran, Daily Bible Readings. Sunday morning worship is meant to be training that permeates the rest of your week. We read together the Gospel, the Epistle and the Old Testament as part of the service. Coming to our church guarantees that you will be in the word. But if Sunday morning is the only time you are fed scripture then you are starving to death. God calls us to read the Bible at church and at home. It is the only way your faith can grow. I've created a daily reading plan that starts in church and continues in your home. We will hear the word from the lectern, from the pulpit, from the Bible class. Then we can continue that same word with our loved ones over coffee, around the dinner table or at bedtime. If you look at your worship bulletin, you will see a Daily Bible reading plan. Sunday lists the Bible chapter that is the subject of the sermon and Bible class. Then Monday you go through that Bible reading as a household or on your own. Tuesday is another reading that touches on last Sunday and so on and so forth. I've listed three reading possibilities for you each day, one that takes 15 minutes, one that takes 10 minutes and one that takes only a few minutes. For example, this Sunday I am preaching on Philippians 1. On Monday, read the whole chapter if you have 15 minutes. If you have only 10 minutes read, Phil. 1:1-2. If you are racing around on that day, stop and read just Phil. 1:2. "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." Let it sink into you. Allow Christ to speak to you and your family. Another way of looking at it is by household. If you are empty nesters, read the whole chapter together. If you have teens, read the middle option. If you have little ones, read the one verse and talk about it. When we proclaim Christ Sunday through Saturday, who knows what amazing things God will do through it? This is how we grow and how the church grows.

| Annual Report Four tumultuous years have passed since we created an "annual" report. We have corrected this lapse and are committed not to let this happen again. Generating an annual report is an important exercise for us in that it allows us to think, reflect, and evaluate to what degree we are being successful and true to our stated mission as a congregation. A report has been prepared and is now available covering our activities since our last formal report on the 2012/2013 fiscal year. The report is designed to update members on the congregation's mission and ministry, including a review of developments with our staff, our Faith Formation and Christian Education Ministry, and our membership and worship participation. The report also contains a financial overview of our assets, liabilities, annual income, and expenses, with a discussion of how our financial condition has improved over the past four years. Further, the report includes a review of our baptisms, confirmations, transfers in and out of our congregation, and deaths. Finally, the report explains activities associated with managing our sanctuary and campus buildings. We encourage everyone to obtain and read a copy of the report, which can be found on the table in the back of the sanctuary. We are grateful to Jerry Nicolaus, Mike Toney, Steve Albers, Andy Ortstadt, and Michelle Fiala for their hard work in compiling the information included in the report and then generating a document that is both informative and uplifting.

| Organist News We are pleased to announce that Jim Thielker will be taking over the position of Music Director for Glendale beginning on October 9, 2017. His first "appearance" will be on Saturday evening October 14, 2017 and Sunday morning October 15, 2017 will be his initial Sunday to play for us. Please welcome Jim and his wife Judy with your usual Glendale warmth as they become a part of the Glendale family.

| Tables of Eight Our "Tables of Eight" will begin in October. A sign-up sheet has been posted on the kiosk; please list your name (and number of participants, 1-2), your phone number, and email if you have one. This time around, I will be putting together groups of six, leaving room for Pastor Scott and Ann to join you, if and when they can. We realize it may not be possible for them to dine with each group every month, but this will at least give them an opportunity to know us further and vice versa. This also means we will only meet three times in any given month, giving a little more leeway in your planning. Remember that by signing up your are committing to hosting one supper a month, but have your choice or entertaining in your home, at a restaurant (dutch), or even using the church as your dining room. Be unique to yourself--paper plates to fine dining, we enjoy all of it just by having a family get-together. Hope to see all of your names on the list. Carol Froesel |
| Oktoberfest Glendale's Oktoberfest is back by popular demand! Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 14 starting at 6:00pm at the home of Sandy and Paul Barbercheck. This is a great opportunity to bring a friend and enjoy the fellowship of Glendale members. We will feature some of the brews from Dan Stauder and Tony Petzoldt from the Gefarhliches Ding Brewery and there will be other beverages as well. Come by, bring a dish to share if you want and enjoy an autumn evening at the Barberchecks, 629 Bonita Avenue, Webster Groves. Babysitting will be provided (2 doors down at the Ortstadt home). Welcome fall with your Glendale friends!

| Potluck It's that time again, time to meet and eat! Our first potluck of the season will be Wednesday, October 18. We will gather at 6:00pm for fellowship and begin dining about 6:30pm. Hope to see a lot of you there!

| Hands on Kirkwood Hands on Kirkwood, now in its seventh year, will again be collective coats, hats, gloves, sweaters, boots, and jeans for men, women, and children. Also being collected are children's books, toys, and diapers, plus new children's socks and underwear. There will be a collection box available at Glendale Lutheran Church until September 24. Please donate to this community event as you are able. Roslyn Croft from Harrison Avenue Missionary Baptist Church is coordinating this outreach service. Those who have a need will be invited to "shop" for their winter needs. We are also invited to join in sorting and setting up for the "Free Store" on Saturday, September 30, at 9:00am and throughout the following week at Kirkwood Baptist Church, 211 N. | Community Events CCLS Carnival Come one, come all! Join us for the CCLS Carnival Friday, September 29 from 5:00-10:00pm and Saturday, September 30 from 11:00am-9:00pm at the CCLS Kirkwood campus, 110 W. Woodbine Road. Ride the Ferris wheel, indulge on a funnel cake, or take part in a pig race that is sure to make the kids squeal. 5 Star Roscoe, featuring band members Rob Boyle, Eric Knost, Brendan Knorp and Alex Schrader, will perform Friday night playing tunes from Fleetwood Mac to Tom Petty. The Lutheran South Lancerettes are performing Saturday at 1:00pm, and kids from School of Rock will take the stage Saturday at 4:00pm. Webster Garden's Brian King will spin records from 6:00pm until close Saturday night. The carnival is a great time to catch up with old friends, or meet some new ones! Brew in the Lou LESA's 5th Annual "Brew in the Lou" Festival will showcase new brews, aged spirits and home-grown entertainment when it returns to the Lily Pond at Francis Park on Saturday, October 14, from 1:00-5:00pm. This year's Brew line-up includes more than 40 local, regional and national breweries, wineries and distilleries--one-stop-tasting for St. Louis craft fans. St. Louis rockers Nick Bifano & The Innocents will lead the live music line-up, followed by the Deutschmeister German Brass Band and music by Brew sponsor 103.3 KLOU. This year's festival also includes arts and craft vendors, always popular People's Choice Home Brew Competition, two food fights--the Battle of the Bratwurst and a Brew Chili Contest. Wristbands are $40 advance/$50 day-of-event and include unlimited tastings and a commemorative glass. Proceeds benefit students and teachers served by the St. Louis-based Lutheran Elementary School Association (LESA). Kirkwood Meals on Wheels We are looking for volunteers to help provide meals for your neighbors. You can help by packing the meal, delivering the meals or preparing supplies for the next day's delivery. One hour in the morning, once a week, is all that's required. Trivia Night The Women of the Word of St Johns Lutheran Church invite you to join us for our annual trivia night on Saturday, October 21 at the St. Louis Police Officers' Association Hall (3710 Hampton Ave, between Mardel and Tholozan). Doors open at 6:00pm and trivia starts at 6:45pm. The cost is $17 per person or $120 for a table of eight, which includes trivia, soda, cookies, and light snacks.
