Pastor Scott's Message
Like many of you, I have a mixed mind when it comes to social media. Social Media are all of the phone and computer apps that connect us like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I'm from Generation X which means I didn't grow up with home computers and cell phones but over my lifetime they have become more and more important. It may not be natural to me to connect with people this way but they are valuable doorways into people's lives.
The Apostle Paul famously said that he would be al things to all peoples. "Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law...I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings." In Paul's day, he had to adapt to Jewish, Greek and other cultures  so that the Gospel could be communicated. In our day, we have to adapt to other cultures as well as other technologies.
The younger generations have grown up with technology so it's second nature for them. The church has to adapt. That is why we have created a communications team that has two people dedicated to represent the church via social media, Kelly Climer and Lauren Mistler. They created Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts for Glendale Lutheran. They follow Lutheran Organizations, Glendale members and repost what's happening. I regularly post on Twitter so they reposted an article I retweeted from the St. Louis Dispatch about the real story behind the movie "The Exorcist." Did you know that the family was Lutheran and they brought their son to Concordia Seminary for help? An exorcism was performed under the bell tower to no avail. The Catholics were called in.
They also post about church happenings like the Movie Night for little ones this Friday "Hotel Transylvania 3" at 6pm. They post photos of our youth like Layton Wille playing tennis, Grace Ortstadt and Abbey Schultz playing volleyball, and Faith Jonas dancing.  They post pictures of our kids: Gwendolyn Boehme, Landon Climer and Hunter Lane at CCLS. They post pictures from our preschool:  teacher Emily Krobath visiting Christ Community in Uganda, kids singing in Chapel, families sharing a meal at the Pancake Breakfast.
Social Media may not be natural for you but God may be calling you to it.  Check out our Ffacebook page at Glendale Lutheran Church-LCMS@glendalelcms.  Our Twitter or Instagram page is @glendale_lcms.  Follow me at @scottericjonas on twitter.  Be prepared for my humor, my love of sports and my love for Glendale Lutheran Church.

Voters' Meeting
A Special Voters' Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 28, 2018, in the Family Life Center immediately following service to elect Leadership Council members and Elders. Bob Jacobson and Rodger Lubben have been nominated to serve three-year terms on the Leadership Council.  Ron Froesel has been nominated to extend his term for another year as an Elder.
Additionally, we will ask the congregation to approve a resolution that will allow us to obtain a line of credit from Lutheran Church Extension Fund to accompany our mortgage loan conversation. We will also have updates on the courtyard project and information on the pricing estimates we have obtained.
Please plan on attending the Meeting to vote on our leadership candidates and the line of credit resolution and to listen to courtyard project developments.
Family Movie Night
Next Potluck!
The next potluck dinner is scheduled for October 17, with fellowship at 6:00pm and dinner at 6:30pm.
LWML Event
Lutheran Women in Mission present Sing Fest with Rev. Terry Dittmer. The event will take place at Mount Calvary Lutheran in Brentwood, 8:30am to 11:30am, during the LWML St. Louis West Zone Rally on Saturday, October 20. A freewill offering will be taken for LWML treasury and event expenses. Please RSVP by October 12 (for food count) to Annette at amt14405@gmail.com.
Books & Bread Outreach
Let's bless our CCLS Glendale preschool families and staff again this Thanksgiving with "Books and Bread." Sign up on the kiosk in the church lobby to let us know how many loaves of sweet breads you would like to bake.

What you need to know:
  • Sign up letting us know how many loaves of sweet bread you would like to make
  • Take the provided labels (that will be near the sign-ups soon) to put on your bread
  • Bring your loaves to church on Sunday, November 18th or arrange with Sue Schultz to deliver them early
  • Pray for our outreach efforts that they may be a blessing for the givers and the receivers
If you have any questions or would like to help, contact Sue Schultz at 314-304-0556.
Faith Support for Individuals with Loved Ones in Jail
Through his role as Chaplain for the St. Louis County Jail, Pastor Vince Stanley has recognized the emotional stress placed on individuals when a loved one is in jail. Pastor Stanley has formed a faith-based and confidential support group for individuals who have loved ones currently or formerly incarcerated. The group will meet monthly on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00pm at Concordia Lutheran Church in Kirkwood. If you are dealing with this stressful situation or have experiences to share, please join this group.
Glimpses from the Homefront

16 May, 1945, Philippines

You folks back home couldn't possibly realize how much articles of interest such as Ink Links means to us in foreign theatre...sincerely hope you'll keep sending those clever little editions to me...it's been almost three years since my departure from Glendale...understand that feeling of anguish in my heart when I say that "there was no place like Glendale and no finer people than the citizens of Glendale." Believe me, I'm homesick...wandering around islands, two years now...war in Europe terminated...Rising Sun will have been blacked out in the not too distant future.

Yours sincerely,
 S/Sgt C. H. Riffel
Yard Work Volunteer Wanted
We are looking for a volunteer to maintain the boxwood bushes on our campus. Bushes should be trimmed as necessary (2 to 3 times per year). It is estimated to take two to three hours to trim. We will provide a cordless trimmer unless you prefer to use you own. Please let Michelle know if you are willing to take responsibility for this seasonal task.
