There was an episode of “Everybody loves Raymond” that I love. Ray joins his dad as an usher. He realizes that his father volunteers to usher because then he can stand in the entranceway and avoid the worship service. He tells his father that ushering is a scam. That’s not how it is in our church. Actually, it’s quite the opposite. Ushers worship and fulfill their job simultaneously.
It’s a sacrifice. Ushers, like everyone else, want to focus on worshipping God during the service. But for certain times they set aside their preference so others can worship. This sacrifice is itself an act of worship. I thank Terry, Ken, Beverly, Derek, Laurel, Ron, Judy, Lisa, Becci, John and Mike for signing up and serving the Lord this way.
In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul says that the church needs, “to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.” That is what ushers do. They help promote an orderly communion service by telling people when to go up to the rail. They also are the eyes and the ears of the pastor. They tell me if my microphone isn’t working, if there is visitors or if I missed a prayer request. I’ve even had ushers be the first to notice a medical situation. If your name wasn’t listed above, please sign up to be an usher. We need you.
