Glimpses of Glendale
Glendale Lutheran Church Newsletter
July 22, 2021
I love having a variety of lectors. The worship service should reflect the differences within the congregation. I went to my mom’s church in California and was disappointed. The pastor did everything including the readings. There was no children’s message so the only person to represent the congregation up front was the pastor.

We have men and women, old and young, new members and long-time members read. I also love the variety of ways to read the lessons. Julie Wise reads with great inflection. Marcia Hempel reads with great intensity. On Saturday nights, I ask for volunteers in the moment. Tom Crabtree loves to orate the Bible and it shows. Young Gwendolyn’s readings always make me smile.

The Word of God was meant to be received person to person. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing from the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17). When the lector is close to that microphone and clearly and passionately speaks God’s words, it moves us. I’d love it if even more people volunteered to lector. It would be great if families did it together with little kids reading a part that they memorized. Emma DeBord has done that before. I’m not the only one who loves a variety of volunteers. Sign up at the kiosk.
Daily Bible Reading
July Food Drive at Glendale

It has been six months since our Holiday Food Drive. As you will see, the table is set up in the hall waiting to be loaded with our generous contributions to be delivered to Kirk Care in our neighborhood. Many in our area are still struggling with food for their meals as well as paper products, cleaning products, hygiene needs and diapers. Keith Rawlings, Youth in Action, informed us that some of the greater current needs are fruit cups and fruit juices. Whatever you want to contribute is wonderful.

Dollar Tree is a good source for many things, especially cleaning products and dish soap in small sizes. Remember NO GLASS. Of course, any of the food items you bought last Christmas can be useful this time as well.
If you would like to contribute but it is not convenient to bring food and/or paper products to church, you can give cash or checks to Marcia Hempel. Please make sure your name is attached to the monetary gift.

Collection began July 3 and will end July 31.
Collecting Reading Material

If anyone has magazines within the last 6 months, or any devotionals or books you’re wanting to throw out, Lauren Mistler would love to take them off your hands. Many nursing home patients would love more reading materials! Please contact lu.mis@att.net. Thank you!
Position Available

Gene Smith is looking for a weekday companion for his wife, Cindy, who has dementia. This would be a paid position and would be for five hours a day, Monday through Friday. If interested, please contact Pastor Scott.

Mortgage Update

Another major milestone has been achieved. Thanks to a recent significant donation earmarked for principal reduction our regular monthly obligation of $5,750 now funds more principal reduction than interest payment. This milestone has been accomplished within 4 years of an original 20 year note! Together with many members who have specified funds for our mortgage principal we have avoided over $130,000 in potential interest payments and our principal has been reduced by almost $200,000. In addition, the term of our loan has been shortened by almost 4 years. This is an amazing example of the stewardship of our members. We acknowledge all with thankfulness as God continues to bless us.
