Our denomination is the oldest church body in America. The situation we are experiencing is common throughout our church body. It comes with being among the oldest denominations. The good news is that we have a lot of experience and wisdom in the LCMS. The bad news is that our kids and grandkids have not stayed in our church body. Although that is a blessing for those other church bodies, especially if those ex-Lutherans are using the doctrine of their youth to influence their new churches.
The lesson is that we need to continue to pass on the faith to the next generations. Yesterday, Gwendoline Boehme and myself joined the Concordia Kirkwood confirmation classes. I taught the eighth graders and led Gwendoline’s 6th grade small group. You also have the opportunity to pass on the faith. Use your opportunities as a parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt and friend to influence the faith of young people. We will soon begin a visioning process at Glendale Lutheran and drawing and keeping young families is one of my priorities. The Cosbys begin teaching Sunday School this Sunday. Tim and Janet Leet lead Children’s messages. What can you do to help keep us young?
