Hymn of Invocation – Jesus Comes Today with Healing (LSB 620)

Jesus comes today with healing,
Knocking at my door, appealing,
Off’ring pardon, grace, and peace.
He Himself makes preparation,
And I hear His invitation:
“Come and taste the blessèd feast.”

Christ Himself, the priest presiding,
Yet in bread and wine abiding
In this holy sacrament,
Gives the bread of life, once broken,
And the cup, the precious token
Of His sacred covenant.

Under bread and wine, though lowly,
I receive the Savior holy,
Blood and body, giv’n for me,
Very Lamb of God from heaven,
Who to bitter death was given,
Hung upon the cursèd tree.

God descends with heav’nly power,
Gives Himself to me this hour
In this ordinary sign.
On my tongue His pledge receiving,
I accept His grace, believing
That I taste His love divine.

Let me praise God’s boundless favor,
Whose own feast of love I savor,
Bidden by His gracious call.
Wedding garments He provides me,
With a robe of white He hides me,
Fits me for the royal hall.

Now have I found consolation,
Comfort in my tribulation,
Balm to heal the troubled soul.
God, my shield from ev’ry terror,
Cleanses me from sin and error,
Makes my wounded spirit whole.

Greeting and Welcome
P:  The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C:  And also with you.
P:  We gather to hear the Word of God, pray for those in need, and ask God’s blessing on those who seek healing and wholeness through Christ our Lord. Let us pray.

Prayer of the Day
P:  Great God our healer, by your power, the Lord Jesus healed the sick and gave hope to the hopeless. As we gather in his name,
C:  look upon us with mercy and bless us with your healing Spirit.
P:  Bring us comfort in the midst of pain, strength to transform our weakness,
C:  and light to illuminate our darkness.
P:  We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ,
C:  our crucified and risen Lord,
P:  who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C:  Amen.

First ReadingJames 5:13-16
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Second ReadingLuke 17:11–19
On the way to Jerusalem [Jesus] was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Sermon

Laying On of Hands and Anointing
Those who wish to receive the laying on of hands and anointing may come to either side of the altar. You will be asked “What would you like Jesus to heal today?” The minister will lay both hands on your head in silence, after which he may dip a thumb in the oil and make the sign of the cross on your forehead, saying:

P:  As you are anointed with this oil, may God bless you with the healing power of the Holy Spirit. May God forgive you your sins, release you from suffering, and restore you to wholeness and strength. May God deliver you from all evil, preserve you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

After prayer is concluded, you may return to your seat and the next person will come forward.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction
P:  The almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the + Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless and preserve you.
C:  Amen.

Hymn – There Is a Balm in Gilead (LSB 749)

Refrain:  There is a balm in Gilead
             To make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead
             To heal the sin-sick soul.

Sometimes I feel discouraged
And think my work’s in vain,
But then the Holy Spirit
Revives my soul again. Refrain

If you cannot preach like Peter,
If you cannot pray like Paul,
You can tell the love of Jesus
And say He died for all. Refrain

Don’t ever feel discouraged,
For Jesus is your friend;
And if you lack for knowledge,
He’ll ne’er refuse to lend. Refrain
