The Fulfilled Life - article by Joel Hempel
"Biblical womanhood" is the theme Pastor Scott gave to his message this past Sunday. Deborah was praised as the principal heroin of Judges, chapters 4 and 5. Deborah the Judge became Deborah the Prophetess, a strong and courageous woman who led the Lord’s army into battle along with Israel’s General Barak – who would not confront the enemy army unless Deborah went with him. Wise man, Barak! Deborah was God's spokesperson, and through her, God gave the people of Israel wisdom, guidance, and courage.
Why hold up Deborah today as a model for all Christian women and men? Because she demonstrates the necessity of seeking and following the will and wisdom of God – IF you want to flourish in your life as a Christian.
Toward the end of his sermon, Pastor proclaimed, “God calls you – like he called Deborah – and places you where he wants you to be to accomplish his will through you.” So true! But how do any of us know God’s will? And, how do we find the fulfilling life God intends for us? These two questions seek the same answer.
Much can be said about knowing God's will and flourishing in life. But the simple truth is God has us in a loving and forgiving relationship through Jesus, our Savior. Daily, we are encouraged to seek a growing relationship with him – much like you would seek a growing relationship with a spouse or another special person you love.
If, after we fall in love, we don't do anything to nurture that relationship, it will not only diminish in passion and intensity, its very existence will be threatened. So also in our relationship with Jesus. If, after we are baptized or are confirmed, we let the relationship "ride," it will be in jeopardy.
Instead of slipping into a boring relationship with God, invest in the following:
1. Seek what David declared about his relationship with God: “I am continually with you (God); you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel . . . There is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:23-26).
Pray for a closer relationship with Jesus. Spend time in his Word in whatever way that best serves your needs (e.g., studying the Bible, singing hymns, reading devotions, attending Bible class, etc.). Receive Jesus in communion. The more we invest in our relationship with God, the clearer his will becomes.
2. “We are the result of [God’s] artistry, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10).
God has plans for us. He instills in us his love, exceptional gifts and abilities, and gives us his Spirit to counsel, guide, and help us find our way. Fulfillment comes as we receive, own, and live into the unique person he has created us to be.
There is no magic to seek, no program to implement, no steps to follow if you want to flourish in faith and life. But, there is intimacy Jesus wants to have with us.
