Three-In-One - article by Joel Hempel

If you go online and key in the words three-in-one, you will see a variety of products: Three-in-one coats, 3-in-1 oil, 3-in-1 shampoo-conditioner-body wash, 3-in-1 charging stations for your smartphone, 3-in-1 car seats for children, and of course, a three-in-one sturdy, 350 lb. weight capacity commode.

Although very different products with very different purposes, they all have two things in common. The service they provide is limited, and they will all wear out! Such is not the case with our THREE-IN-ONE GOD.

As most know, this past Sunday was designated Holy Trinity Sunday. Anyone who has tried explaining the Trinity to a non-Christian, or even to oneself, knows it’s impossible. God is beyond our human capacity to comprehend, and His ways are so far beyond our ways that it seems foolish even to try (see Romans 11:33-34). And yet, some keep trying. I did!

Back in the day, when I gave children’s messages every week, I had to come up with an annual illustration to describe God as the Trinity. These illustrations included an apple, an egg, water, etc. Although each illustration is hugely limiting, I felt compelled to keep trying to explain or at least describe the incredible ONE who has revealed Himself as Father-Son-Holy Spirit (see Matthew 3:16-17, 28:19).

So, why even have a day or season to celebrate the Holy Trinity? I believe the answer is in part found in what is called the apostolic benediction: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all (2 Corinthians 13:14).

What do you need in your life? With what are you struggling? Our ONE GOD, who is above all and beyond comprehension, has made Himself known in Jesus Christ and made Himself experienced in the work of the Holy Spirit.

Is it a challenge for you to believe you are loved – completely loved with all of your limitations and sinful inclinations? God’s love for you is without reservation (see John 3:16-17). His desire is for you to receive his eternal embrace.

Do you know that you are redeemed and forgiven by the grace of God in Jesus Christ? You are! Are you able to rest confidently in the grace of Jesus? That’s his desire for you.

Are you struggling with sin in your life? The Holy Spirit is at work within you to free you from Satan’s seductive ways. Are you carrying an unmanageable load? The Spirit, who is our strength, will uphold you. Are you facing a challenge, an enemy, or a task beyond your ability? It is not beyond the capacity of God’s Spirit within you.

Like the song lyrics declare: Out God is an awesome God! His being and ways are beyond understanding. But they are not beyond our Spirit-enabled ability to receive!

From Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To God be glory forever. Amen! Romans 11:36

Voters' Meetings

The Leadership Council is calling two Voters’ Meetings to take place in the Family Life Center immediately after the services on June 9, 2024, and June 23, 2024. The agenda for the June 9, 2024, meeting will include a first reading of the proposed 2024-2025 Church Budget and a request for the congregation to vote on some Parish House roof repair options along with approval to use bequest funds to pay for those repairs. The Leadership Council will then request voter approval for the Budget at the June 23, 2024, meeting. Please make sure to mark these dates in your calendar so you can attend and ask any questions you may have.
