Hymn of Invocation – Hail Thee, Festival Day (LSB 489)

Refrain: Hail thee, festival day!

Blest day to be hallowed forever;

Day when the Holy Ghost

Shone in the world with His grace.

Bright and in likeness of fire,

On those who await His appearing,

He whom the Lord had foretold

Suddenly, swiftly descends. Refrain

Hark! For in myriad tongues

Christ’s own, His chosen apostles,

Preached to the ends of the earth

Christ and His wonderful works. Refrain

God the Almighty, the Lord,

The ruler of earth and the heavens,

Guard us from harm without;

Cleanse us from evil within. Refrain

Jesus, the health of the world,

Creator of all and redeemer,

Son of the Father supreme,

Only-begotten of God. Refrain

Spirit of life and of pow’r,

Now flow in us, fount of our being,

Light that enlightens us all,

Life that in all may abide. Refrain

+ Preparation +

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C: who made heaven and earth.

P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

P: O almighty God, merciful Father,

C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Introit

P: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.

C: O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

P: These all look to you, to give them their food in due season.

C: When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

P: When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Gloria in Excelsis

Glory be to God on high;

and on earth peace goodwill toward men.

We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee,

We glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee

for Thy great glory.

O Lord God, heav'nly King,

God the Father Almighty.

O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

O Lord God, Lamb of God,

Son of the Father,

that takest away the sin of the world,

have mercy upon us.

Thou that takest away the sin of the world,

receive our prayer.

Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father,

have mercy upon us.

For Thou only art holy;

Thou only are the Lord.

Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,

art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And with thy spirit.

P: Let us pray. O God, on this day You once taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit. Grant us in our day by the same Spirit to have a right understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in His holy consolation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First Reading1 Kings 2:1–12

When David’s time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the LORD your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, that the LORD may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’

“Moreover, you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, how he dealt with the two commanders of the armies of Israel, Abner the son of Ner, and Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed, avenging in time of peace for blood that had been shed in war, and putting the blood of war on the belt around his waist and on the sandals on his feet. Act therefore according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace. But deal loyally with the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table, for with such loyalty they met me when I fled from Absalom your brother. And there is also with you Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse on the day when I went to Mahanaim. But when he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the LORD, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’ Now therefore do not hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man. You will know what you ought to do to him, and you shall bring his gray head down with blood to Sheol.”

Then David slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David. And the time that David reigned over Israel was forty years. He reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. So Solomon sat on the throne of David his father.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

EpistleEphesians 4:1–16

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.” (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Alleluia

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Holy GospelJohn 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fifteenth chapter.

C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.

But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – We Are the Church (AGPS 252)

Refrain: I am the church! You are the church!

We are the church together!

All who follow Jesus all around the world!

Yes, we’re the church together!

The church is not a building,

The church is not a steeple,

The church is not a resting place,

The church is a people! Refrain

At Pentecost some people

Received the Holy Spirit

And told the Good News through the world

To all who would hear it. Refrain

Hymn of the Day – O Holy Spirit, Enter In (LSB 913)

O Holy Spirit, enter in,

And in our hearts Your work begin,

Your dwelling place now make us.

Sun of the soul, O Light divine,

Around and in us brightly shine,

To joy and gladness wake us

That we may be truly living,

To You giving prayer unceasing

And in love be still increasing.

Give to Your Word impressive pow’r,

That in our hearts from this good hour

As fire it may be glowing,

That in true Christian unity

We faithful witnesses may be,

Your glory ever showing.

Hear us, cheer us by Your teaching;

Let our preaching and our labor

Praise You, Lord, and serve our neighbor.

O mighty Rock, O Source of life,

Let Your dear Word, in doubt and strife,

In us be strongly burning

That we be faithful unto death

And live in love and holy faith,

From You true wisdom learning.

Your grace and peace on us shower;

By Your power Christ confessing,

Let us see our Savior’s blessing.

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And with thy spirit.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up unto the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.

C: It is meet and right so to do.

P: It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who ascended above the heavens and, sitting at Your right hand, poured out on this day the promised Holy Spirit on His chosen disciples. For all this the whole earth rejoices with exceeding joy. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth;

heav'n and earth are full of Thy glory.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He, blessed is He,

blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

O Christ, Thou Lam of God,

that takest away the sin of the world,

have mercy upon us.

O Christ, Thou Lamb of God,

that takest away the sin of the world,

have mercy upon us.

O Christ, Thou Lamb of God,

that takest away the sin of the world,

grand us Thy peace. Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – I Am Forever Who I Am

Though mountains slide into the sea,

And waters rush where fields should be,

Though monuments and nations fall,

Your holy city stands through all.

When nothing seems to stay the same,

You teach us your eternal name.  Refrain

Refrain: I AM forever WHO I AM. Above you, beneath you,

Around you and within you. Be still and know that I AM God.

Each generation looks for truth,

And doubt can trouble age or youth.

If other gods would take your place

Remember us with love and grace.

Reclaim us if we go astray;

You are the Truth, the Life, the Way.  Refrain

Some days seem long, though life is brief,

And death is waiting like a thief.

When vision fades and dreams go dry,

We will on unseen things rely.

Our stories take up but a page,

But yours goes on from age to age.  Refrain

Closing Hymn – Holy Spirit, Light Divine (LSB 496)

Holy Spirit, light divine,

Shine upon this heart of mine;

Chase the shades of night away,

Turn the darkness into day.

Let me see my Savior’s face,

Let me all His beauties trace;

Show those glorious truths to me

Which are only known to Thee.

Holy Spirit, pow’r divine,

Cleanse this guilty heart of mine;

In Thy mercy pity me,

From sin’s bondage set me free.

Holy Spirit, joy divine,

Cheer this saddened heart of mine;

Yield a sacred, settled peace,

Let it grow and still increase.

Holy Spirit, all divine,

Dwell within this heart of mine;

Cast down ev’ry idol throne,

Reign supreme, and reign alone.
