Hymn of Invocation – Holy, Holy, Holy (LSB 507)
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert and art and evermore shalt be.
Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity!
Invocation P: In the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.
Psalm – Psalm 8 P: O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens. C: Out of the mouth of babes and infants, You have established strength because of Your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. P: When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, C: what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him? P: Yet You have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. C: You have given him dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, P: all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, C: the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!
Salutation P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Gracious Father, for the joy set before Him, Your Son, Jesus, endured the suffering of the cross. In our suffering, O Lord, strengthen our faith that we may know Your companionship in our darkest hours; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.
Old Testament Reading – Ezekiel 18:25-32 “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? When a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. Again, when a wicked person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he shall save his life. Because he considered and turned away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live.”
Epistle – Hebrews 2:11–15 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
Holy Gospel – John 12:20–33 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die.
Hymn of the Day – Jesus, Refuge of the Weary (LSB 423)
Jesus, refuge of the weary, Blest Redeemer, whom we love, Fountain in life’s desert dreary, Savior from the world above: Often have Your eyes, offended, Gazed upon the sinner’s fall; Yet upon the cross extended, You have borne the pain of all.
Do we pass that cross unheeding, Breathing no repentant vow, Though we see You wounded, bleeding, See Your thorn-encircled brow? Yet Your sinless death has brought us Life eternal, peace, and rest; Only what Your grace has taught us Calms the sinner’s deep distress. Jesus, may our hearts be burning With more fervent love for You; May our eyes be ever turning To behold Your cross anew Till in glory, parted never From the blessèd Savior’s side, Graven in our hearts forever, Dwell the cross, the Crucified.
Sermon
Hymn – When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (LSB 425)
When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died, My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God; All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.
See, from His head, His hands, His feet Sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e’er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a tribute far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all!
Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.
Responsive Litany P: Hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Let our cry come to You. P: Almighty God, in the fullness of time, You sent the promised offspring, Your Son, Jesus Christ, to save us. P: Throughout these forty days, O Lord, keep our eyes fixed on Jesus C: and help us to run with perseverance the race marked out for us, P: until the day when we and all the faithful rest and rejoice with You in paradise C: and experience the fullness of Your peace; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. P: Hear us, O Lord, as we silently bring You our private petitions.
Silent prayer
P: Trusting in Your mercy, we pray as Your Son taught us:
Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Benediction P: The Lord bless you, defend you from all evil, and bring you to everlasting life. C: Amen.
Closing Hymn – God, Who Made the Earth and Heaven (LSB 877)
God, who made the earth and heaven, Darkness and light: You the day for work have given, For rest the night. May Your angel guards defend us, Slumber sweet Your mercy send us, Holy dreams and hopes attend us All through the night.
And when morn again shall call us To run life’s way, May we still, whate’er befall us, Your will obey. From the pow’r of evil hide us, In the narrow pathway guide us, Never be Your smile denied us All through the day.
Guard us waking, guard us sleeping, And when we die, May we in Your mighty keeping All peaceful lie. When the last dread call shall wake us, Then, O Lord, do not forsake us, But to reign in glory take us With You on high.
Holy Father, throned in heaven, All-holy Son, Holy Spirit, freely given, Blest Three in One: Grant us grace, we now implore You, Till we lay our crowns before You And in worthier strains adore You While ages run.
