I have no idea why, I just called it Spokane. I spent a few days there this past week leading pastors in a study about character and the church's role in forming people to have character that honors God and serves others well. At the conference I talked with a recent seminary graduate who has been a pastor for only a matter of months. He's serving a rural church 30 minutes north of a metropolitan area of about 250,000 people. And, he's serving a church in the metro area. The rural church meets in a tiny chapel in the beautiful countryside. The "city" church meets in a hotel. They sold their building recently to another congregation. On a typical Sunday, each church has about 25 people in attendance. For now, the pastor's office is a small room at one end of a pole barn owned by one of the members. He shares the vibrant green-painted space with the member's fishing equipment. So, is this a sad story of the church's weakness and poor health? Are these churches dying? The young man called to be their pastor doesn't think so. He's thrilled with his new responsibility and excited about all that lies before him as he serves these people and leads them as their shepherd. Is he being youthfully naïve and unrealistic? I don't think so--not at all. In fact, I think he's got exactly the right outlook and plan. Join me for Sunday morning Bible class, and in the next few weeks I'll present my reasons for sharing this young pastor's optimism. Of course, underneath all of the reasons that I'll present is the great foundational truth that Christ is the Lord of his church, and will always provide for it exactly what it needs.

Faith Formation Ministry One Family Bible Class
Dr. Biermann leads the Bible Class this morning in the Family Life Center. Grab a cup of coffee and join us. Sunday School Preschool through 1st grade children will meet in the lower level of the Parish House (under the gym). Grades 2 through 6 will meet in the lower level of the new building across from the elevator, room 012. High School youth will gather in the Youth Room. Confirmation class for 7th and 8th grade youth will be in the conference room next to Pastor's office, room 113.
Women's Thursday Evening Bible Study We will not be meeting on October 20 but instead meet on Saturday morning, October 22 for breakfast at Karen Frimel's home, 9:00am. All women are invited and welcomed! Please join us! If questions, please contact Cathie Albers at 314-882-2033 Stewardship Sentence Genesis 1:1 'In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.' Christian generosity to the Lord's work through our stewardship begins with this realization: We are the sheep of God's pasture, it is He who made us, not we ourselves. |
Pastoral Care If you need pastoral care for any reason, don't hesitate to contact the church office or one of the vacancy pastors directly. Pastor Biermann will be at the church on Monday and Thursday mornings most weeks, and Pastor Erkkinen is available on campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. |

The GLC website has a new look. A small team worked to update the appearance of the site and the technology that makes it work. Not only does the site look a little more modern, it is much easier for volunteers with limited technology skills to update information and keep it fresh. You can share your thoughts about the new site by sending an email to office@glendalelutheranchurch.org. There is also a "Comments" option on the website that you can use to format an email from the website. If you would like to help with keeping information updated, please include your interest in your email. |

These touches of kindness are much appreciated by those who have received them. Thank you-- Phyllis Phelps and Beth Nicolaus |
Calling All Thrivent Members! If you are a member of Thrivent Financial, and you so choose, you have the opportunity to share some of your Action Team Dollars with ministries and projects going on in our GLC congregation and community. Many Thrivent members are not aware that these funds are available so they go unused. The outreach committee has used some of these Action Team dollars to host outreach events in the past, but would like to get more Thrivent members involved. If you are interested in learning more about how to use your Action Team funds, please contact Sue Schultz at 314-304-0556. |
