Titus and Jude are two of my five grandchildren. They were visiting us this past week with their mother, while their dad attends to his pastoral responsibilities at his congregation in Michigan. It is, of course, always a delight to have them visit. Tuesday morning, I took them to Dierbergs to buy hamburger buns. It was no ordinary errand. It was an adventure. At 2 and 3 years old, every event can become so. They anticipate making the journey, and tell me as we drive which cart they want-the black one that looks like a race car with two seats side by side and two corresponding steering wheels. The store itself is filled with wonders to explore: vegetables and fruits they have yet to taste, helium-filled balloons on strings that can be reeled down and then released again, pumpkins of assorted sizes each with its own virtues to be appreciated, and best of all, when the aisle is completely empty, there is the sudden acceleration and short burst of speed as we race past the shelves only to brake abruptly as the endcap approaches. For them, it is all full of wonder and simple joy. And for me, it is much the same. Adults have, I think, a way of becoming far too full of themselves and their sophisticated tastes for what is rare and unusual. Perhaps, the wiser course is to learn with children simply to enjoy each event for the gift that it is, without trivializing the ordinary by our quest for what is spectacular. Yes, extraordinary events are rightly treasured. But, the greatest treasures may be those close at hand too routine to gain our attention: a child's smile, a sparrow's song, a warm blanket, a wafer and some wine. |
Faith Formation Ministry One Family Bible Class
Dr. Biermann leads the Bible Class this morning in the Family Life Center. Grab a cup of coffee and join us. Sunday School Preschool through 1st grade children will meet in the lower level of the Parish House (under the gym). Grades 2 through 6 will meet in the lower level of the new building across from the elevator, room 012. High School youth will gather in the Youth Room. Confirmation class for 7th and 8th grade youth will be in the conference room next to Pastor's office, room 113.
Stewardship Sentence Philippians 1:5 "I always thank God... because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now." God doesn't need anything we have. Yet He invites us to give so that we can indeed become "partners in the Gospel." This is a gift of His grace: inviting us to do significant work in the Kingdom of God. |
Pastoral Care If you need pastoral care for any reason, don't hesitate to contact the church office or one of the vacancy pastors directly. Pastor Biermann will be at the church on Monday and Thursday mornings most weeks, and Pastor Erkkinen is available on campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. |
