| | A Message from Dr. Biermann Working in the church offices a couple mornings a week, I often hear singing. It's not coming from the sanctuary or the choir room. It echoes down the stairwell or through the hallway. As the CCLS children move from place to place, singing accompanies their steps. While I suspect a focusing or diversionary motive on the part of the adult guiding the group, the effect is nevertheless quite nice-especially this time of the year. Now, I hear Christmas songs being sung by little voices. Children love Christmas carols. Adults love Christmas carols. One of the great aspects of this season is the way that otherwise ardent opponents of things "religious" being injected into secular life make little complaint when overtly Christian lyrics find their way into decidedly secular spaces. It's wonderful to hear "Joy to the World, the Lord is come," or "God and sinners reconciled," while shopping at the mall or waiting for an oil change. People love carols. Since we love to sing carols, why not do it more? I've been telling you for some time about the service on the 18th of December that will be packed with carols (twelve at last count). In addition to the carols, we'll also hear the unfolding of God's great plan of salvation. The practice of Christmas worship centering on carols and readings dates back more than a hundred years. It began in England in the late 19th century, and has become a staple throughout Christendom since then. On the 18th, we'll share in the tradition with our own service of carols and readings-with the children and young people of the congregation actively participating in leading our worship. To help celebrate this special service, it would be great if we could have some cookies available after the service. I know that the season of Christmas typically makes heavy demands on bakers but, I hope that I might be able to prevail on some of you to add one more small occasion to your Christmas cookie preparation. If you can bring along some cookies on the 18th, let me or the church office know. I look forward to seeing all of you in worship this weekend and on the 18th. |
Faith Formation Ministry One Family Bible Class
Dr. Biermann leads the Bible Class this morning in the Family Life Center. Grab a cup of coffee and join us.
Sunday School Preschool through 1st grade children will meet in the lower level of the Parish House (under the gym). Grades 2 through 6 will meet in the lower level of the new building across from the elevator, room 012. High School youth will gather in the Youth Room. Confirmation class for 7th and 8th grade youth will be in the conference room next to Pastor's office, room 113.
Stewardship Sentence  Matthew 11:10 "This is he of whom it is written, 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.'" John prepared the way for Jesus by preaching repentance. Then, when Jesus' ministry was complete and He was raised from the dead, He sent out his disciples to preach "repentance and the forgiveness of sins." We never outgrow the need for repentance - for examining our lives, turning away from our pet sins, and turning toward Jesus in faith to receive his forgiveness and strength for a renewed life of godliness.

| Pastoral Care If you need pastoral care for any reason, don't hesitate to contact the church office or one of the vacancy pastors directly. Pastor Biermann will be at the church on Monday and Thursday mornings most weeks, and Pastor Erkkinen is available on campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. |

| Thanks to CCLS Sunday Helpers A big thank you goes out to each of you who contributed in any way to the success of our CCLS Sunday Reception in the gym. To the bringers of baked goods--a special thanks because many of you also baked bread for last month's Gift Bag and Bread event for the CCLS families. We had many other helpers setting up/taking down tables and chairs and just pitching in to clean up. Thank you all. Working together to help is part of who we are at Glendale.

| LFCS Season of Sharing - December 11 Giving Deadline GLC has been asked to participate this year in Lutheran Family and Children's Services Season of Sharing program. Gift cards are needed from stores such as Walmart, Target, Dollar General, and/or grocery stores. These gift cards will then be distributed to over 700 needy people. We have placed a box on a table near the front entrance where you may deposit gift cards, or you can deliver the cards to the Church Office. Gift cards may also be mailed to the Church Office designating them for Season of Sharing. Monetary gifts may be made payable to LFCS with "Season of Sharing" in the memo line. Lutheran Family hopes to raise over $20,000 to provide needed funding for families who are struggling with the basic necessities of life. All gifts are requested before Sunday, December 11, so they can be sent to LFCS and the distribution process can begin.

| Altar Flowers The Altar Flower chart for 2017 is now posted to the right of the church office door. Especially needed are the first few Sundays in January. A flower arrangement is a great way to celebrate an anniversary, birthday, or remember a loved one. If you have any questions regarding flowers, call Beverly Dixson at 314-822-2899.

Christmas Concert! Come listen to the sounds of the season at First Presbyetrian Church of Kirkwood, 100 East Adams, on Sunday, December 7 at 7:00pm. Follow the Star to Ascension Lutheran's Live Nativity Ascension Lutheran Church will have the true meaning of Christmas on display on the last Saturday before Christmas. The church will host a live nativity scene on Saturday, December 17, from 5:00pm-9:00pm, featuring live cattle, sheep, a camel, as well as shepherds, wise men, and Mary and Joseph. The evening will include an angel choir, refreshments, and the Christmas message being broadcast over the radio. For more information, call 314-832-5600 or visit AscensionSTL.com. Room at the Inn Trivia Night Room at the Inn Trivia Night will be held on January 14, 2017 at the Maryland Heights Church of Christ, 107 Midland Ave, from 6:30pm-10:00pm.
