Pastor Biermann's Message
My wife taught me a new word this past week. Perusing the latest edition of Reader's Digest--a copy she had borrowed from her mother--she came upon a short piece about a variety of interesting words (no, it wasn't the standard item, "Towards More Picturesque Speech," but a special piece for this edition). Knowing well my interests, she covered the contents aloud with me. I learned about what were once neologisms from Dickens (boredom) and Seuss (nerd), that zarf is a name for the cardboard sleeve on a disposable coffee cup (which I later further learned comes from an old Arabic word meaning envelope), and I added the word petrichor to my vocabulary-at least my written vocabulary. It is my new favorite word. The word originated in the 1960s, and it remains new or obscure enough that my computer does not recognize it as a legitimate word. But Wikipedia has a full article on the word, so there's no doubt...it's legit...Wikipedia has spoken.

So, what's my newly acquired word mean? According to Wikipedia, petrichor is "the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil." Exactly. You know that smell. It's actually got a scientific and fascinating origin involving oils produced by plants, water bubbles on soil, and the release of aerosols from the earth. You can read all about that at Wikipedia if you're interested. For me, it is the poetic and spiritual truth packed into the word that makes it wonderful. Petrichor: it smells real and honest and utterly organic. It smells like earthy freshness. It smells like newness and growth. It smells like life rejuvenated. It smells like everything is going to be all right. It smells like God visiting his world with grace.

When your soul is parched, sunbaked, and withered, God sends his grace and floods it alive. He gives you his word of fresh forgiveness for wrongs and failures. He gives new hope for old pain and persistent problems. He gives the promise of a complete re-creation of everything. He gives you his love, his strength, his blessing. The experience of being doused in his deluge of grace is warm and comforting and exhilarating and empowering and utterly real and honest all at once. It's like the smell of the dusty and thirsty ground after it has been soaked with rain. It's like petrichor. Come and catch a whiff of it this Sunday--even if it doesn't rain.

Operation Christmas Child
I hope you've noticed the "Christmas in July" display of Operation Christmas Child Boxes. I've started this campaign now because this is when many school supplies are at a deep discount. Actually, we have until November to complete our donations. There is literature at the display to help you decide what to include in your gift(s). Last year, 11 million children received these cherished boxes. Those sent from GLC were sent to Mexico (we can now track them via computer). This is a project for the whole family, from grandparents to preschoolers, so please join us to reach the less fortunate and possibly non-Christians (tracts and other Christian literature will be included in your box by volunteers before they are dispatched overseas.

If you have ANY questions, please call Carol Froesel at 822-1365. Have fun and God bless our efforts!

P.S. Be sure to identify your box(es) by age and gender (there will be labels at church) and if possible include $9 to help with the shipping costs--this is not necessary but helpful. Again, thank you!

Special Choir Rehearsal
Special Notice: We will again be having Choir Rehearsal this Wednesday, August 16, at 7:00pm. Please come and lend your voice to the choir for Pastor Scott's installation on August 27!
