Long tradition and protocol leave nothing to chance. There is a formal ceremony acknowledging the change of command and the precise moment that the new captain assumes his office is known to everyone on board the ship. The installation of a pastor has the same sort of significance. It is the time when a man becomes the pastor of a people, the shepherd of a flock. Many other factors are relevant, of course, a call issued and accepted, physical arrival at the new congregation, the beginning of the first pay period, and enrollment in different benefits plans, could all signal the beginning of a ministry. But, it is the installation that marks the start and the official acceptance of the responsibility of the pastoral office in a particular congregation. So, installations matter. An installation is not simply symbolic, however. It's not just a piece of ecclesiastical pageantry done for the sake of tradition. It is also the way that the wider church steps alongside a single congregation and joins in recognizing the arrival and legitimacy of a new pastor. Other pastors are present not just to "offer encouragement" or "show support." The presence of pastors from other congregations and places of service provide the universal church's affirmation of the individual congregation's work, and confirmation of that congregation's call to a new pastor. The role of the District President is even more explicitly that of extending the wider church's agreement in the actions of the congregation and the blessing of their choice of a new pastor. So, installations matter. Most important of all, though, the service of installation contains a sacred promise between the man installed and the Lord who placed him there. The man promises to uphold God's truth and commits himself to deliver faithfully God's gifts to God's people. He promises to be a shepherd who honors his Lord and provides for his flock. The promise is one the pastor makes to God. Of course, God also active at the installation assuring the man called and now placed that he will be at work in and through him providing for all that he needs to fulfill his call in that place. So, installations matter. Do not miss the installation of your new pastor, Scott Jonas. There is much to celebrate. It matters.

We'll explore "What's Your Mission?" using DVD's and scripture as we study "Israel's Mission" through curriculum provided by Ray Vander Laan's series "That the World May Know." Ray is a biblical archeologist whose teaching always gives fresh insight to scriptures. Thursday Evening Women's Bible Study All women of Glendale are invited to participate in the Thursday evening Bible study which will begin September 7th. We meet on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7:00pm at the church. We will be using "Glory Days: Trusting in the God Who Fights for You" by Max Lucado, published in 2015. Each person may order the book as they wish--it may be available as an eBook, on Amazon, on a church book resource site, or certainly at Barnes and Noble. Please order as you wish and come ready to be encouraged by the Word and Love of our God. Please pick up your name tag on the way into class and please call or email me if you have questions or concerns. Looking forward to being with you all! God's blessings to all during this special time in our church as we welcome the Jonas' family. |
Operation Christmas Child I hope you've noticed the "Christmas in July" display of Operation Christmas Child Boxes. I've started this campaign now because this is when many school supplies are at a deep discount. Actually, we have until November to complete our donations. There is literature at the display to help you decide what to include in your gift(s). Last year, 11 million children received these cherished boxes. Those sent from GLC were sent to Mexico (we can now track them via computer). This is a project for the whole family, from grandparents to preschoolers, so please join us to reach the less fortunate and possibly non-Christians (tracts and other Christian literature will be included in your box by volunteers before they are dispatched overseas. If you have ANY questions, please call Carol Froesel at 822-1365. Have fun and God bless our efforts! P.S. Be sure to identify your box(es) by age and gender (there will be labels at church) and if possible include $9 to help with the shipping costs--this is not necessary but helpful. Again, thank you! - Carol Froesel

In Memoriam Virginia (Ginny) Ameiss was called to eternal glory more than a year ago. She and her husband, Al, and her sister, Alice Achenbach, were faithful members of this congregation. Certain persons of Al's extended family have made it possible for Ginny's cremains to be buried at Sunset Memorial Cemetery (on Gravois Road) on Wednesday, August 23, at 10:30am. Anyone who wishes to attend that brief burial service, or would like more information, please call Cathie (882-2033) or Steve Albers (910-7325) or simply meet at the cemetery shortly before 10:30am.
