Pastor Scott's Message  Debbie Toney died on Tuesday. Her death is positioned between three big events: the wedding of her son, Reformation Day and All Saints Day. Debbie's passing reminds us of the significance of these three days. These three days also give meaning to Debbie's life and death. Last Sunday, I received word from Steve Albers that Debbie's health was declining and she wasn't expected to make it to next Saturday's wedding ceremony. We were going to move up Clayton and Anjanae's exchange of vows to 4pm that day. Mike was at the worship service but I noticed he was missing from communion. The ceremony had been moved up to 11am. After the service, I left and Steve and I performed the wedding at the foot of Debbie's bed with Mike and their children, Brian and Lisa as witnesses. Debbie got to bless the newly wedded couple, making the sign of the cross on their forehead. She truly passed on the blessings that had been given to her and gave them to Clayton and Anjanae. The public wedding ceremony will go on as planned. This Sunday is reformation Sunday. We remember how God used Martin Luther and other Christian leaders to reform the church. We celebrate that God is always reforming his church through the Holy Spirit. God uses his powerful word to shape us, our family, our congregation and the world. God's word shaped Debbie and Glendale Lutheran Church is in better shape because of her presence. That good work continues. Next Sunday is All Saints Day. Once a year, we dedicate a Sunday to recognize the Saints who have passed. We were praying that Debbie would not be on this year's list. I kept thinking how miraculous it would be if God healed her and she could walk down the aisle. God would be glorified. But God's will was not ours. We mourn her death. It's hard to lose someone who was such a part of our lives. She was kind, generous and faithful to us. But we don't mourn without hope. God is glorified through the death and resurrection of Debbie Toney. God is glorified through the Toney wedding, Reformation Day and All Saints.

A Regular Voters' Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 28, 2018, in the Family Life Center immediately following service to elect Leadership Council members and Elders. Bob Jacobson and Rodger Lubben have been nominated to serve three-year terms on the Leadership Council. Ron Froesel has been nominated to extend his term for another year as an Elder. Additionally, we will ask the congregation to approve a resolution that will allow us to obtain a line of credit from Lutheran Church Extension Fund to accompany our mortgage loan conversation. We will also ask voters to approve a $25,000 expenditure from our Bequest Fund to upgrade our 50-year-old sanctuary air conditioner. Finally, we will have updates at the Voters' Meeting on the courtyard project along with information on the pricing estimates we have obtained. Please plan on attending the Meeting to vote on our leadership candidates, the line of credit resolution, and funding our air conditioner upgrade, and to listen to courtyard project developments. |

Books & Bread Outreach Let's bless our CCLS Glendale preschool families and staff again this Thanksgiving with "Books and Bread." Sign up on the kiosk in the church lobby to let us know how many loaves of sweet breads you would like to bake. What you need to know: - Sign up letting us know how many loaves of sweet bread you would like to make
- Take the provided labels to put on your bread
- Bring your loaves to church on Sunday, November 18th or arrange with Sue Schultz to deliver them early
- Pray for our outreach efforts that they may be a blessing for the givers and the receivers

Faith Support for Individuals with Loved Ones in Jail Through his role as Chaplain for the St. Louis County Jail, Pastor Vince Stanley has recognized the emotional stress placed on individuals when a loved one is in jail. Pastor Stanley has formed a faith-based and confidential support group for individuals who have loved ones currently or formerly incarcerated. The group will meet monthly on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00pm at Concordia Lutheran Church in Kirkwood. If you are dealing with this stressful situation or have experiences to share, please join this group. |

...Hope I stay on the mailing list...it has finally told me where some of my friends are that I have not seen in a long time...in ordnance company...saw very little of actual combat...sights I have seen have been many. Yard Work Volunteer Wanted We are looking for a volunteer to maintain the boxwood bushes on our campus. Bushes should be trimmed as necessary (2 to 3 times per year). It is estimated to take two to three hours to trim. We will provide a cordless trimmer unless you prefer to use you own. Please let Michelle know if you are willing to take responsibility for this seasonal task. |
