Pastor Scott's Message It's epiphany season, which is when we celebrate God's light coming into the world. So it's fitting that Rev. Dr. Will Schumacher is teaching us this Sunday from 10:45-11:45. He is shedding light on God's work through Lutheran churches all over the world. He is a member of our church who regularly travels the globe to teach, learn, and visit family and friends. Pastor Schumacher has a point of view on Lutheranism based on extensive experience and education. We are blessed to have him as a member and lecturer. Last Sunday he set the stage by sending us to the Bible where God's says he is calling his people to reach all nations. The Lutheran church is a small part of the whole but God does big things through small vessels. Then Rev Schumacher summarized the status of the church in Europe. All countries in Europe have freedom of religion and many have official churches. That means that there is a state sanctioned and funded church body. Citizens are opted in to having their taxes go towards the functioning of the church. In return they can have baptisms, weddings and funerals for their family. There are also free churches but all of them experience only 3-7% weekly attendance from their membership including the Lutheran churches. Europe is a secularized continent. The good news is that an influx of immigrants from Africa and Asia are very religious. Their faith is encouraging native Christians. This week, Rev Schumacher is describing the Spirit's work in Africa, Asia, South America and Australia. I hope you come and hear what the Lord is doing from a man who has seen it with his own eyes. |
