Hymn of Invocation – Jesus, Greatest at the Table (LSB 446)

Jesus, greatest at the table,

The almighty Son of Man,

Laid aside His outer clothing,

Poured some water in a pan;

As the Twelve lay, hushed in silence,

He the servant’s task began.

Marvel how their Lord and teacher

Gently taught them not to vie

As He humbly knelt before them,

Dusty feet to wash and dry,

By His tender touch expressing

True compassion from on high.

Jesus took the role of servant

When upon that gruesome span,

For all human sin He suffered

As a vile and loathsome man;

On the cross poured out like water

To fulfill the Father’s plan.

Can we fathom such deep mercy?

Do we see what God has done?

Who can grasp this great reversal:

Love that gives His only Son?

Christ, the sinless for the sinners,

For the many dies the One.

Jesus gave to His disciples

A commandment that was new:

“Show My love to one another,

Do as I have done for you;

All the world will know you love Me

As you love each other too.”

First ReadingEphesians 1:3–10, 15–22

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth….

For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church….

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Second ReadingLuke 14:1–14

One Sabbath, when [Jesus] went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” And they could not reply to these things.

Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Responsory 1 John 2:1; Psalm 32:1

C: He was delivered up to death; He was delivered for the sins of the people.

Catechism The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Hymn – Jesus, Refuge of the Weary (LSB 423)

Jesus, refuge of the weary,

Blest Redeemer, whom we love,

Fountain in life’s desert dreary,

Savior from the world above:

Often have Your eyes, offended,

Gazed upon the sinner’s fall;

Yet upon the cross extended,

You have borne the pain of all.

Do we pass that cross unheeding,

Breathing no repentant vow,

Though we see You wounded, bleeding,

See Your thorn-encircled brow?

Yet Your sinless death has brought us

Life eternal, peace, and rest;

Only what Your grace has taught us

Calms the sinner’s deep distress.

Jesus, may our hearts be burning

With more fervent love for You;

May our eyes be ever turning

To behold Your cross anew

Till in glory, parted never

From the blessèd Savior’s side,

Graven in our hearts forever,

Dwell the cross, the Crucified.

Hymn – O God, Our Help in Ages Past (LSB 733)

O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast,

And our eternal home:

Under the shadow of Thy throne

Thy saints have dwelt secure;

Sufficient is Thine arm alone,

And our defense is sure.

Before the hills in order stood

Or earth received her frame,

From everlasting Thou art God,

To endless years the same.

A thousand ages in Thy sight

Are like an evening gone,

Short as the watch that ends the night

Before the rising sun.

Time, like an ever-rolling stream,

Soon bears us all away;

We fly forgotten as a dream

Dies at the op’ning day.

O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Be Thou our guard while troubles last

And our eternal home!

Closing Hymn – God, Who Made the Earth and Heaven (LSB 877)

God, who made the earth and heaven,

Darkness and light:

You the day for work have given,

For rest the night.

May Your angel guards defend us,

Slumber sweet Your mercy send us,

Holy dreams and hopes attend us

All through the night.

And when morn again shall call us

To run life’s way,

May we still, whate’er befall us,

Your will obey.

From the pow’r of evil hide us,

In the narrow pathway guide us,

Never be Your smile denied us

All through the day.

Guard us waking, guard us sleeping,

And when we die,

May we in Your mighty keeping

All peaceful lie.

When the last dread call shall wake us,

Then, O Lord, do not forsake us,

But to reign in glory take us

With You on high.

Holy Father, throned in heaven,

All-holy Son,

Holy Spirit, freely given,

Blest Three in One:

Grant us grace, we now implore You,

Till we lay our crowns before You

And in worthier strains adore You

While ages run.
