Hymn of Invocation – Just As I Am (LSB 570, verses 1-3)

Just as I am, without one plea

But that Thy blood was shed for me

And that Thou bidd’st me come to Thee,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am and waiting not

To rid my soul of one dark blot,

To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about

With many_a conflict, many_a doubt,

Fightings and fears within, without,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

+ Preparation +

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

Opening Sentences

P: God invites us to gather in His name.

C: We are gathered to worship and praise.

P: Our heavenly Father’s house is a house of prayer for all the nations.

C: He gathers people from every corner of the earth to sing His praises.

P: We listen to God’s Word.

C: We hear the message proclaimed of Christ crucified.

Confession and Absolution

P: Though this is a house of prayer, we do not always honor God’s house as we should. Still, our heavenly Father is merciful, and He invites us ever into His house to ask for forgiveness.

Silence for reflection.

P: Heavenly Father,

C: we have sinned against You and against our neighbors. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. Disrupt our sinfulness. Forgive us, renew us, and restore us, on account of Jesus. Amen.

P: Almighty God in His mercy sent Jesus into our world, not only to disrupt our sinfulness but also to forgive us by His death and resurrection. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. We are forgiven because of Christ crucified.

+ Word +

Introit

P: For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

C: Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters.

P: Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the pit close its mouth over me.

C: Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

P: For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

Salutation and Prayer of the Day

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray. O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy, be gracious to all who have gone astray from Your ways and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of Your Word; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

First ReadingExodus 20:1–17

And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

“You shall have no other gods before me.

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

“You shall not murder.

“You shall not commit adultery.

“You shall not steal.

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle 1 Corinthians 1:18–31

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Therefore, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy GospelLuke 15:1-7

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fifteenth chapter.

C: Glory to You, O Lord.

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear [Jesus]. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”

So he told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen.

Children’s Hymn – God Loves Me Dearly (LSB 392)

God loves me dearly, grants me salvation,

God loves me dearly, loves even me. Refrain

Refrain: Therefore I’ll say again: God loves me dearly,

God loves me dearly, loves even me.

He sent forth Jesus, my dear Redeemer,

He sent forth Jesus and set me free. Refrain

Hymn of the Day – I Lay My Sins on Jesus (LSB 606)

I lay my sins on Jesus,

The spotless Lamb of God;

He bears them all and frees us

From the accursèd load.

I bring my guilt to Jesus

To wash my crimson stains

Clean in His blood most precious

Till not a spot remains.

I lay my wants on Jesus;

All fullness dwells in Him;

He heals all my diseases;

My soul He does redeem.

I lay my griefs on Jesus,

My burdens and my cares;

He from them all releases;

He all my sorrows shares.

I rest my soul on Jesus,

This weary soul of mine;

His right hand me embraces;

I on His breast recline.

I love the name of Jesus,

Immanuel, Christ, the Lord;

Like fragrance on the breezes

His name abroad is poured.

Preface

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who gave the temple of His body over to be crucified on the cross, then raised it up on the third day, just as He promised. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow'r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes

in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to overturn the sin in our lives, and form Your church into a house of prayer for all the nations. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn – Chief of Sinners Though I Be (LSB 611)

Chief of sinners though I be,

Jesus shed His blood for me,

Died that I might live on high,

Lives that I might never die.

As the branch is to the vine,

I am His, and He is mine.

Oh, the height of Jesus’ love,

Higher than the heav’ns above,

Deeper than the depths of sea,

Lasting as eternity!

Love that found me—wondrous thought!

Found me when I sought Him not.

Only Jesus can impart

Balm to heal the wounded heart,

Peace that flows from sin forgiv’n,

Joy that lifts the soul to heav’n,

Faith and hope to walk with God

In the way that Enoch trod.

Chief of sinners though I be,

Christ is all in all to me;

All my wants to Him are known,

All my sorrows are His own.

He sustains the hidden life

Safe with Him from earthly strife.

O my Savior, help afford

By Your Spirit and Your Word!

When my wayward heart would stray,

Keep me in the narrow way;

Grace in time of need supply

While I live and when I die.

Blessing

Post-Communion Collect

P: Let us pray. Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this Meal. Keep us steadfast in the true faith, ever hearing and proclaiming Christ crucified for all; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

Closing Hymn – Just As I Am (LSB 570, verses 4-6)

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;

Sight, riches, healing of the mind,

Yea, all I need, in Thee to find,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,

Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;

Because Thy promise I believe,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am; Thy love unknown

Has broken ev’ry barrier down;

Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
