God of the Impossible - article by Joel Hempel

It’s impossible! That’s what James Buchanan Eads was told when, in 1867, he proposed a bridge to span the wide and mighty Mississippi River from St Louis to East St Louis, Illinois. One of the never-done-before proposed engineering feats was the foundations for the bridge that would be secured 100 feet below the water level (see Wikipedia). As we all know, Eads was right; the naysayers were wrong.

Next week – Holy Week – we will see the God of the Impossible in action. The unprecedented and never-to-be-repeated events of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday changed humankind’s trajectory and gave hope to countless millions – including us.

Are you a believer in the God of the Impossible? I’m not asking if you believe there is a God or that his Son, Jesus Christ, is our Savior. I’m assuming that. I’m asking if you believe God, by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, is actively involved in your life – now – and changing the impossible into something far more glorious than you can imagine.

Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me? Jeremiah 32:27

What impossibilities are you facing in your life?

In my research for this article, one online author brought my attention to the thief on the cross. Imagine what was on his mind at his trial and sentencing; imagine his hopelessness on the morning of his crucifixion. This was a man of no possibilities. The only thing in his sight was a painful and humiliating death. Then, on Golgotha, the last place on earth he would expect to meet God and find salvation, there was Jesus hanging on the cross next to him (Luke 23:39-43).

Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

Truly, I say to you, today, you will be with me in paradise.

Not long ago, Marcia and I went to a prayer service with our son Nathan and his family. One of the songs entitled Speak to the Mountains by Chris McClarney had this refrain:

I won’t be shaken; I won’t be moved. My God is faithful, His promise is true. So, I speak to the mountains: “Oh, it’s time to move, ’cause my God is bigger, better, stronger, greater than you!”

Some of us now – and the rest of you will at a later date – have a seemingly immovable mountain in front of us. It’s too high to climb and too wide to go around. It is a mountain of trouble that’s overwhelming and threatens to defeat us.

Have faith! Jesus says to us. Have faith in HIM, not in what he will do for you. If Jesus wants the mountain to move, he will move it. If he has something far more glorious for you than a moved mountain, he will make it happen.

What is impossible with man is possible with God. Luke 18:25-27
