Pastor Scott's Message
This week we start a new sermon series, Christ Alone. As we approach the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, it is a good time to focus on the truths that Martin Luther rediscovered. The 1500s started out as a dark time for the Church. The Sunday morning services were in a language the average person could not understand. People did not own Bibles. They were too expensive and they were also in a language they didn't know. Pastors were untrained and uneducated. The scripture was a rare thing that only the educated few could access. Understandably, the Gospel was hidden.

Then God raised up Martin Luther to correct these abuses. He learned Greek and studied the original New Testament. God's words changed him and motivated him to share the good news. He translated the New Testament into the German language so people could discover the truth. Christ alone saves us sinners by grace alone. Through faith alone are we made Children of God. The only way we know this is through scripture alone. The Lord deserves all of the credit so to him alone be the glory.

These are the core teachings of the Bible. Jesus taught them 2,000 years ago. Luther taught them in his time. We teach them today. Come to worship and Bible class on Sunday to hear it again. Don't you need more good news in your life?

Voters' Meeting
A reminder that a Voters' Meeting is scheduled for this Sunday, October 22, 2017, in the sanctuary immediately following service to elect Elders and Leadership Council members. Jason DeBord, John Steele, and Robert Lubben have all been nominated to serve three-year terms as Elders. Sandy Barbercheck and Jeff Wille have been nominated to renew their service on the Council for additional three-year terms. We will provide you with Elder candidates when we finalize the nominees. Additionally, we remain grateful that Thomas Schultz has joined the Leadership Council as a nonvoting member.

Please plan on attending the Meeting to provide any additional nominations you may have and to vote on these Elder and Leadership positions.
Doors and Windows
Those of you that have attended any gathering in the Family Life center perhaps have noticed that the seals on the double pane windows that open onto the "Rose Garden" have been compromised. This is something that has been worsening over the past few years and has created a "fog" between the two panes of glass. This can only be remedied by replacement and monies for the effort have been approved in this year's expense budget.

Having said all that, those who have been given the responsibility for the upkeep of our campus property began to think of an alternate and, perhaps, better solution. The "Rose Garden" is a space that could find new life if we had better access. Karen Frimel and Paul Barbercheck have agreed to help us create a vision of what a renewed exterior space might look like and what multipurpose activities it might support. Regardless of what vision we as a congregation ultimately agree to adopt, the first and certainly essential step in the process is to create that better access to the area. We need to replace one or both of the current window walls with large doorways. Money spent to replace windows would be money foolishly spent.

The challenge: doors cost more than windows. We are in the process of looking at multiple vendors and assessing the added cost. In the meantime, we will be creating an opportunity for those who might want to support this effort financially. You can designate monies to a "Dollars for Doors" campaign.
Reduction of Principal for Member Loans
Thank you to those who continue to specify funds beyond contributions to the general fund for the on-going need to reduce our indebtedness. We continue to use these funds to whittle away at the total owed.
